Today Team CH have been exploring ways to partition six, seven, eight and nine into two parts. Moving on from the ‘five and a bit’ structure. First we used cubes to partition numbers six to nine in alternative ways and shared how we had partitioned these whole numbers. Next, once we could all confidently partition a number using cubes we looked at writing the whole and two parts from a picture. Dodge the river! Team CH loved getting competitive this afternoon as we divided ourselves into four team. Each team had to zig-zag their way our of the river to reach the baby deer's and rescue them from the lions! Today children have been focussing on partitioning even numbers. We discovered that unlike off numbers, even numbers cannot be partitioned into an odd part and an even part. We practiced partitioning the even numbers 2,4,6,8 and 10 into two even parts and two odd parts. While practicing this skill we always check if our parts were odd or even and explained how we knew this. Today Team CH have been investigating the materials; wood, metal, plastic, glass, rock and paper but before focusing on the material we spent some time naming the object. Next, we thought about how everything is made from something and started to name the material which the object is made from. Finally we grouped all the objects into materials.
Today Team CH have been investigating ways to partition odd numbers. We know that odd numbers are NOT made from groups of two. We discovered that odd numbers can only be partitioned into one odd part and one even part.
Team CH have really enjoyed number day! We Always love singing our multiples of two song https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/supermovers/times-table-collection/z4vv6v4 and solving number problems. Team CH have created some fabulous number robots and experienced a two times table race for the first time!
Today Team CH have been investigating Rosa Parks. We couldn’t understand why this (as Erin put it) incredible woman was arrested for sitting on a bus! We watched a video that helped us understand a little bit more; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRJlZ_QVb4E. Finally, we thought of some brilliant questions that we would like to ask Rosa Parks.
We finished by leaving children with this question; 'What would the world be like without Rosa Parks?' Today Team CH have been exploring odd and even numbers. First we allowed the children to explore the shape of the numicon, then we discussed and group the numicon according to the shape of it. Next, we discussed odd and even numbers and used the shape of the numicon to discuss this. Then, we moved onto ten frames and introduced the stem sentence; Numbers that can be made our of groups of two are even and Numbers that cant be made out of groups of two are odd numbers. Finally, we used number sense to practice skip counting and noticed that when we add two to an even or odd number we get the next even/odd number.
