Today we have noticed that our caterpillars are huge and have grown so much since they arrived!! We also spotted that they were starting to move to the lid and hang down so we think they will be forming their chrysalis very soon! Great observations, Shooting Stars!

Today we begun to learn about the Coronation of King Charles III in preparation for our celebrations tomorrow. We began by looking at a photograph of King Charles and discussed who he is- learning to say his name and the Makaton sign for King. Then we talked about what happens at a coronation and we looked at a photograph of the crown. After that we looked at a photograph of Queen Elizabeth at her coronation and we noticed that it was in black and white. The children were amazed at the difference! We used the words "long ago" and "past" to support our understanding of early History. Then Miss McGinnes showed us a black and white photograph of her Mum at a street party in 1953. She was three years old and wore red, white and blue to celebrate but we couldn't tell as it was a black and white photograph. We were surprised to find out that lots of people didn't have a television in those days and Miss McGinnes' Mum didn't have one. However, Miss McGinnes' Dad's family bought a television just so they could watch the coronation. We looked at a picture of what his television would have looked like and we thought it was very different and looked funny. Here are some photos of us engaged in our discussions- the children were very interested and asked lots of questions! At snack time, we watched part of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth from 1953. Again, the children were very interested and amazed that it was in black and white. During the session, we did some painting using red, white and blue, had a role play coronation tea party in our home corner and we all coloured in a flag to create our own class bunting. The bunting will be on display tomorrow for our special celebration day.
Over the last few days, we have been working together to weed our garden and then plant some beautiful flowers. We learnt how to dig a hole, handle the plant carefully, place it in the hole and then gently push the soil back around. Finally we watered them and we know we will need to check them each day to see if they need more water.
In our Maths learning this week, we have been learning about size linked to our story of Jack and the Beanstalk. The beanstalk in the story was very tall! We have used words including tall, taller, tallest, short, shorter, shortest, medium, and middle sized to compare. At group time today, we worked together to put our beanstalks into size order from the shortest to the tallest. There was some amazing working together and lots of lovely Maths langauge used- well done Shooting Stars!
This week we are continuing our "Watch it Grow" theme by focusing on the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. We read the story at group time and the children tried to join in with the repeated phrase: "Fee fi fo fum, I smell the blood of an English man." We also tried to change our voice to sound like the fierce, scary giant.
Following reading the story, we talked about how we could grow our own bean plant and we found out that we would need a seed. We thought about how to plant our seed and used the words: plant pot and soil. Then we went into the outdoor area and we all had a go at planting our own seed. We learnt to carefully fill our pot with soil, make a hole with our finger, put in the seed and then carefully cover it up. Then we spoke about what we needed to help it grow and some children knew it would need water, Each child then had a go at watering their own seed. We are hoping that they will grow very soon! To link in with our learning of the week, we have decided to make a huge paper beanstalk to add to our reading area. Each child has created their own leaf to add to the beanstalk. We learnt to hold our pen or pencil in a tripod grip so we can use it with good control. We had a go at drawing lots of different patterns to decorate it: lines, spirals, spots, stripes, zig-zags and circles.
Look our for a photo of our completed beanstalk coming soon! |
