Our book of the week is "The Little Red Hen" which links perfectly with our theme of Harvest time. Today we enjoyed reading the story together and the children learned to join in with the repeated phrases "Who will help me cut the wheat?" and "Not I." As they played with their friends, they used props and puppets to act out the story.
In the small world area, we have a farm as that is where the Little Red Hen lives. The children have been working together with the wooden blocks to build their own farm yard and add the animals, role playing their own stories. We have also been mark making linked to the story.

This week we have some different jigsaws in our provision and there has been such a lot of learning already! The children are learning to work together and help each other, taking turns to put pieces in and talking about their ideas. They have learnt to turn over all the pieces and use the picture on the box to help them. We spoke about the corner pieces and the straight edges and the children learnt to complete the outside first before adding the inside pieces. What a lot of problem solving!
Today we joined the rest of the school and dressed as rock stars for the day! We had some amazing outfits!!
In our music area, we added microphones and the children loved singing, dancing and making music together as they role played being rock stars. I think we have some future musicians in our nursery! For our baking activity this week, we have made chocolate rice crispy buns. Firstly, we recalled how to melt the chocolate from last week and then we talked about how we could mix it with the rice crispies. There was lots of opportunities to practise our motor skills as we poured the chocolate, stirred and mixed the rice crispies and chocolate together and then carefully spooned it into a bun case. We learnt that by home time, the chocolate had set and gone hard again ready for us to eat! Yummy!
In our painting area, we have been learning to print using different shaped sponges. The children learnt how to dip the sponge into their paint and then press it onto the paper. Our focus words were: dip, press and print. This also linked with our Maths learning about shapes and there was lots of talk about the shapes they were printing- circle, oval, triangle and square.
We are having lots of fun this week exploring our provision areas which are enhanced to support our learning around the rhyme Humpty Dumpty. Some of our provision activities this week include:
- using duplo and wooden blocks to build a wall for Humpty - practising our fine motor skills by clipping parts together to make our own Humpty Dumpty -creating Humpty Dumpty in the play dough area In our creative area, we have been learning to use pritt stick to stick materials to paper. Today, we practised this skill while designing our own Humpty Dumpty. We learnt that we need to use glue in order for our materials to stick and we learnt to spread the glue carefully and then press the item onto our paper. Here are some photos of us creating our Humpty Dumpty's:
This week we are focusing our learning around the rhyme Humpty Dumpty. At group time today, we practised singing the rhyme together and we spotted the rhyming words- wall/ball and men/again.
We used our claves to tap out the beat as we sang the rhyme together. We also played and sang the rhyme loud and then quiet. In our music area, we have different books of the rhyme and the children enjoyed singing and playing their instruments together. The children in nursery this morning decided to create their own obstacle course. They worked together to move and arrange the tyres and cable reels and then took turns to balance along. The children explored different ways to move- some used their feet to walk along and jump off the end, some crawled along like a caterpillar and some used their hands and feet to help them. There was lots of problem solving as they worked out how to step safely and adjust the equipment so they didn't fall- what a lot of learning!
This afternoon the children enjoyed mark making on a large scale. We rolled out a large sheet of paper and the children used pens and crayons to make their own big scale marks. We explored lines, circles and spirals.
