Two Rainbows have read the class a story this week! How brave are they?! Over the past couple of weeks in phonics some of us have been reading "The Spell" and "Black Hat Bob." The Spell is about Stitch the Witch who tries to turn her naughty cat into a frog, and Black Hat Bob is about Red Hat Rob trying to steal all his money!
Here are the superstars who read their story to the class. We are immensely proud and everyone enjoyed your stories so much! The Rainbows were a fantastic audience and sat quietly and listened carefully too!

We began by all reading together "Big, Bad Bug" by Oxford Owl and talked about how dad tricked the children and made a big bug out of a potato! We then matched some sentences to the correct picture from the story, but we had to read them very carefully as some of them had mistakes in.
Rainbows have been using their phonics skills to read independently as well. Some of us have been "Fred Talking" to read CVC words and matched them to the correct picture. Some of us have been matching simple sentences to pictures and some of us have been matching complex sentences with different digraphs and tricky sight words. We have been practising our Read Write Inc. skills and some of us can now confidently segment and blend in our head ("Fred in your head") to read words. Some of us are becoming very speedy readers now! It has been fabulous to see the Rainbows accessing these activities independently during provision time too, as well as reading the books they have been reading in phonics. We are proud of you Rainbows! In maths we have been continuing with our Mastery in Maths approach and have been recapping "one more." We have used the number blocks to help us. Penguin helped us to place them next to each other but we noticed that one was in the wrong place because the "stairs" didn't add one more block each time. We also learnt that they have to have the same starting point for their base, and that was tricky to explain!
We have used the stem sentence "___is one more than___" to help us explain our answers. We have also been recapping what the word "fewer" means and have been identifying groups with fewer and more this week. After checking on our beans we planted last week we are amazed too! They have already started to shoot and some are getting quite tall already!
We will keep you posted as to how they do! Yesterday the Rainbows took home their sunflower seed they planted too. We would love you to measure them as they grow and send us updates on Seasaw! We wonder whose will grow the tallest.... Our story focus this week has been the Extraordinary Gardener. It is a lovely story about how plants and wildlife can have a positive impact on our environment and shows that sharing and caring for others can make our community a vibrant and wonderful place to be.
The vocabulary we have been learning this week is; imagination, wild, ordinary, roamed, soared, longed and discovered. During provision our activities have helped develop our fine motor skills, creative skills, understanding of the world, reading, writing and maths! We have mixed colours to paint a still life photo of some pink and cream roses, mixed shades of grey to create pictures from the extraordinary gardener, created pictures of a flower with a stem, flower, petals, seed, roots and leaves, designed seed packets, and so much more! Here we are again learning lots of new things and trying out our skills! If you look through further posts you can see what other activities we have also been getting up to! You may have read in another post that we have been learning about the past and have been exploring miners lamps.
To support our understanding of how the world used to be and how it has changed over time we read the book "In the Toy Museum" by David Lucas. The story is about lots of old toys who wake up at night and hide from their friend. We talked about toys that the children have now, and discussed toys they had a long time ago. The children were able to play with some toys from the past during provision time and loved trying something new! Here you can see them having fun and persevering with some new things! We enjoyed another bug hunt this week to help us secure the knowledge of bugs and their habitat.
We found lots more centipedes this time and some woodlice but the spiders seemed to evade us again! We are getting more confident identifying the features of the bugs and know that some of them like to live in cool, dark and damp places. We were more confident using the pooters to collect them in to observe them and were very gentle when letting them free when it was time to come back to school. We even went on another hunt in our outdoor area. We found so many centipedes of different sizes and lots of worms that had been washed from the soil with the rain. Today for Feel Good Friday we took part in some Just Dance activities. We danced to Trollz, One Direction and Waka Waka. We have certainly been very active and talked about how our bodies changed after exercise by sweating, flushing and being out of breath.
We loved dancing so much we even had a dance to MC Grammar maths songs too! Here we are keeping fit and healthy! Rainbows questioning skills are really coming on and we can use a range of question words. We know that questions help us to find out information and we are certainly interested in a lot of topics!
We don't always get to ask Google to find the answer to everyone's questions so here are the questions below so you can ask at home. This week we asked Google "How do you solve a mystery?" and "How do you make glass?" We watched a really intersting video for the second question that told us silica sand is used and it showed us the process in a factory. What is a red spider with black? (Violet) What do snakes eat? (Ianis) What are worms made out of? (Diego) How do you make glass? (Hugo-John) Where can you go on holiday? (Olivia K) How do you get to the airport? (Freddie) How long do snakes live? (Jude) This week in maths we have been revisiting numbers to 20. We have practised counting and also how to count large groups of objects where you cannot subitise because there are too many.
We moved large groups of objects into lines or sets so we could easily see how many there were, and counted in twos and fives to see how many there were altogether. That was much easier than counting one at a time. We also tried to count objects that could not be moved. This was really tricky as penguin tried to count them but missed some out and counted some of them twice! We tried crossing them out each time we counted them so we counted correctly. We also revisited using Rekenreks and can confidently say that there are 10 beads on the top (5 red and 5 white) and 10 on the bottom (five red and five white again) so there are 20 beads altogether. We are very speedy at moving a group of beads across rather than moving one bead at a time. |
