Today we held Park Street's very own TT Rockstars Day, where the children and staff were invited to dress up as a TT Rockstar. It was amazing to see all the various costumes, facial paints and hairstyles across every year group. In Team DB, the children participated in many different times tables acitivities, including a competition between the Teams on TT Rockstars itself. The children are showing their competitive side in wanting to be the Team of the week winners! Keep practising Team DB, you are really showing what TT Rockstars you really are!

During this half term the children have been investigating and learning all about coputer systems and networks. As part of their learning, we have been looking intently at how search engines work on the internet, as well as ensuring internet safety. The children understand that we do not share information about ourselves readily, and to be wary when internet sites ask us persoanl details about our lives. The children have been learning about cookies and how websites can store information about the searches that we make, readily making suggestions for future browsing. The children have been using different search engines to locate information and how the words that we enter can impact the results that are found. They have enjoyed exploring Google and Duck, Duck Go and finding out how one search can result in millions of results! They are also developing their understanding of how search engines prioritise the results for them to use. Team DB have been busy once again this week! Here is an overview of this week's learning:
Maths In maths this week, we have been learning about decimal fractions. The children have been using their previous learning about tenths and applying their place value knowledge to recognise the value of a tenth and how tenths can be composed. The children have been using manipulatives and Braining Camp to eplore tenths, written as both decimals and fractions. Literacy In reading this week, the children have been continuing their reading of the class text, 'Why the Whales Came', by Michael Morpurgo. The children have been identifying new vocabulary and defining these new words, as well as adding these to the Vocab Vault on our literacy display to help with their writing. In writing, the children have been investigating and exploring the different methods used when writing persuasively. The children's aim is to write a persuasive piece of writing to encourage the population of Bryher not to venture to Rushy Bay. During our Geography lesson, the children were amazed to discover that the island of Bryher actually does exist! R.E. During our R.E. session this week, the children have been continuing their learning about the Islamic faith. The children are aware how people of the Muslim faith only believe in one God, Allah, and how this resembles people of the Chrisitan faith. The children also learnt about how Allah is known by 99 other names! The children have begun to develop their understanding of the five pillars of Islam. Science This term, the children are studying all about light. They have begun by learning about the different parts of the human eye, as well as developing an understanding of how light travels in straight lines. Our pattern seeking investigation, saw the children investigating whether or not an animals size had an impact on the length of the animal's gestation period. Through using media to research this, the children sought that the larger the animal was the longer their gestation period, and were astounded to learn that some animals could be pregnant for almos two years! Today, the Year 5s were very lucky to take part in the Ramp-Up event at Park Street. The children took to the Courts, where ramps had been set up by the team. Once they had donned their helmets, the children were given the opportunity to use scooters and BMX bikes to explore the various ramps. As the morning progressed, so did the children's confidence. Everyone was having a go, whether the ramp was big or small. The children had an amazing morning and were all exhilerated at being on the ramps. Some children enjoyed the experience of riding the BMXs, expecially as they had to ride them stood up! What a fantastic day we had touring Whitby as part of our Geography topic for this term. The children were brilliant all day long, exploring the different areas of Whitby, asking lots of questions and listening intently. Firstly, we ventured down the 199 steps to explore the centre of Whitby, visiting renowned artist John Freeman's studio. Mr Freeman was present and the children were able to observe how he painted his scenes using water colours and advising the children how to apply the technique to their own art. Mr Freeman also answered pre-prepared questions set by the children themselves and gave gifts for us to share back at Park Street. Our next venture was to walk to the harbour, discussing the town's industry in more detail and focussing upon the human and physical geography of the area. The children were impressed at the crates that were still used by the fishermen, as well as observing the various trawlers and boats that were preent in the harbour. Some of the children also shared their experiences on previous visits to Whitby with their families. The children were amazed that the bridge would open up to allow the larger boats to pass through. We then walked back up the 199 steps to the infamous Abbey. As we climbed higher and higher, we stopped on occasion to look back at the view of the localality. The children recognised that the buildings were built into the hillside, and looked at the different styles of homes and shops that they could see. Upon reaching the top, we carefully looked amongst the gravestones standing outside St Mary's church, and were fortunate enough to espy a wedding taking place! It was then our turn to tour the Abbey with the Heritage tour guides. The children listened very carefully to the details about the history of the Abbey and why and how it had been built. They explored various replica artefacts, finding out about how the items would have been used. We all then had the opportunity to dress up as a Benedictine Monk, Mrs Bamforth included! We all then learn about the daily life of a Monk and how they had to be silent. The children managed to perform this task brilliantly, and were excellent at thr role! Travelling back over the North Yorkshire Moors, when we thought the children would have been ready for a rest, they all thoroughly enjoyed a sing-a-long on the coach. Singing and dances in their seats, all the eay back to Park Street. Thank you Team DB, you were excellent role models the entire day! After a wonderous first week back, Team DB have settled brilliantly into Year 5. The children have been introduced to the various topics they will be learning about this half term, beginning their Year 5 learning journey. This week we have begun our Time Table Race challenge, which will last for the next three weeks, both at school and the children will be bringing a race home each evening. This week in Team DB we have been doing the following:
Maths In our maths learning, the children have been focussing upon place value knowledge, reading and writing numbers, identifying the value of digits, comparing and ordering numbers, and counting in powers of 10. Literacy In reading, we have started our class text. 'Why the Whales Came', by Michael Morpurgo. The children have gathered information about their class author, understanding more about Morpurgo and the ideas behind some of his favourite stories. The children have been focussing upon the vocabulary he uses to convey meaning. In writing, the children have been identifying persuasive language, analysing how this can be used to engage and influence the reader. We have had a wonderful day in Team DB, and the children have enjoyed their first day in Year 5. We have explored what learning and activities we will be focussing on next year, as well as getting to know each other a little bit more. We have discussed all the different topics with each other that we will be covering next year, as well as the various trips they will be participating in. We are all already looking forward to our first trip in the autumn term, to the coastal town of Whitby!
During the day the children have participated in numerous Incredible Me! activities, including completing our Helping Hands, Me In A Jar and setting our own personal target that we would like to achieve by the end of Year 5. We have also made a list of class rules, where the children have decided what they would like their classroom to be like next year. To end the day, Mrs Bamforth read the opening chapter to the text we will be reading in the autumn term, from our class author, Michael Morpurgo's, 'An Elelphant in the Garden'. Overall, we have had a fabulous transition day into Year 5, and the teacher's and TAs have had a wonderful day getting to know a little bit more about the children. |
