This week our learning has been based around ‘Wild Animals’. We started the week listening to the story ‘Dear Zoo’. We said that the wild animals wouldn’t make good pets and may be quite dangerous! We have written our ‘Dear Zoo’ book each child worked hard to use there Fred Fingers to write the name of the animal they had chosen and what was wrong with it! Our provision learning activities have included; playing the ‘Visit the Zoo’ board game, colouring in the spiral snake before using our carefully cutting skills to cut along the dashed lines, we have tried very hard to use different junk modelling resources to create our own wild animals and in the funky fingers area we have been using our Peter Pointer and Tommy Thumb to peel stickers and place them along the outline of shapes. In our small world area, we have been using the animals to create our own zoos! Our Talk through Story of the week was “Where the Wild Things Are” – the children listened attentively to the story, answered questions about the story, joined in with favourite phrases and took on the role of the Wild Things doing freeze-frame expressions!

In Literacy, our Year 1 children have begun a new unit of writing. The text driver for this piece of writing is “Where the Wild Things Are”. As a hook into our learning children watched a drawing tutorial for a wild thing and produced some wonderful drawing. We have been able to listen attentively to the story and answer questions about what has been read. We have learnt about the suffix ‘ed’ and know that when we add this to a verb it turns into past tense. In Maths, our Reception children been practising saying what the whole is when there are 2 equal parts, described the attributes they noticed for a group of objects and sorted these objects into groups based on attributes. We have described attributes of Numberblocks and sorted Numberblocks into ‘odd blocks’ or ‘even tops’ and we have investigated patterns of doubles. Our Year 1 children have been identifying a missing part when a whole is partitioned into two parts, combined two or more parts to make a whole and wrote expressions to represent the images we had and learnt to explain that the = sign can be used to show that the whole and the sum of the parts are equal. In Science, we learnt to describe and compare the structure of animals. We know that a bird is a bird because it has a beak, wings and feathers, that they hatch from eggs and that most birds can fly but some cannot such as penguins and ostriches. We know that reptiles have dry scaly skin and lay eggs on land. We learnt that amphibians live on land or water when adults, they live in water when young, have soft skin and lay eggs in water. We learnt that we are mammals because mammals have hair or fur, drink milk from their mummies and know that they can live on land or water. We know the features of fish are; gills, scales, fins and we know that they are water dwelling. On Thursday, we held our class assembly where we shared some of our learning from this year and performed last half-terms poem “Bedtime March-Past”. The children were amazing and thank you once again if you were able to join us.
This week we have begun our new topic on ‘Amazing Animals’. Our theme was ‘Pets’. We started the week listening carefully to the story ‘Tabby McTat’ by Julia Donaldson. We explored what animals we could own as pets such as cats, dogs, rabbits, lizard, tortoise, horse, guinea pig, hamster, snake, fish and chicken! We discussed what we need to do to care for a pet and concluded that pets need a loving home, a space safe to live, water and appropriate food – we spoke about how certain foods can make animals poorly.
Our learning activities have included; drawing a picture about a pet they have at home and we have been writing sentences about our pets! If we don’t have a pet at home, we have been writing about what pet we would like. Children have been completing graphs to show what their friends favourite pet is out of a dog, cat, rabbit, fish and bird! In the creative area, we have been practising our careful cutting skills to cut out the body parts of animals then using split pins to join the parts together. For our funky finger activity, we have had to move pom poms around inside a plastic wallet to the hole and then squeeze them out! Today, we held a discussion around our focus questions “Why do I need sleep?”. We learnt that sleep gives our body and brain time to rest and prepare for the next day and for this to happen we need to have enough quality sleep. We learnt that if we do not get enough sleep we will feel sleepy and this means that we won’t have as much energy so we cannot learn or play properly.
Welcome back to the second half of the Spring term in Team EO. We hope you all had a lovely holiday and are ready for an exciting and busy half-term ahead! We are looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow.
This half-term our topic focus is 'Amazing Animals'! We will be exploring different types of animals and their habitats and we will also be discussing the needs of the animals which will link closely to this terms' Science learning on animals. Our core book for this half-term is "The Tale of the Naughty Little Rabbit". In Team EO, we have learnt that robots are machines that can do tasks and that they can do these tasks because they have been programmed by humans – we tell the robots what to do.
We explored the floor robots ‘Bee-Bots’ and we used our talk partners to talk about what the buttons on a floor robot might do and then we tried the buttons out. We have considered the direction command buttons, as well as the ‘clear memory’ and ‘run program’ buttons. Today, we had fun celebrating NSPCC Number Day! In class we had lots of number and shape related activities including: dominoes, skittles, numicon and threading, NumberBlocks colouring and design a maths t-shirt and singing lots of number related songs!
The grown-ups outfits across the Sunshines and Rainbows sparked lots of discussion around what number was missing, what is one more and one less. We had lots of fun making Numberblock headbands just like our grown-ups but most of all we had lots of fun celebrating the day! This week we have thought about and discussed whether all fairy tales have a happy ending and started by listening to “Cinderella”. Throughout the week we have also listened to “Sleeping Beauty” – we concluded that both of these fairy tales have a happy ending and we were very pleased that they did. We have also thought about characteristics of a fairy tale and know that they have a good character, bad character and some magic. For our Talk through Stories this week we have focused on having poetry time where we have begun to learn “Bedtime March-Past” that we look forward to sharing with you at our class assembly. Our learning activities have included; using multi-link cubes to measure the length of wands, copying fairy-tale themed building brick models, writing party invitations and thought bubbles about what we would wish for if we had a fairy godmother, creating wands, crowns and shields and threading the correct number of beads onto the wands. In Literacy, Year 1’s have worked hard to join two sentences together using the conjunction ‘and’. The children have been describing several different settings in preparation for writing the description of the top of the beanstalk. Children have worked hard to ensure their sentences have capital letters, finger spaces and full stops with correctly formed letters. We have also tried to include the conjunction ‘and’ in our own sentences. Reception continue to access their appropriate RWI groups. In Maths, Reception started the week comparing length and height to measure how long/tall an object is. We then used our conceptual subitising to describe parts of a whole set and described the arrangements, next we investigated ways of making 7 using two pars and used our fingers to make and describe 7 as “5 and 2 more”, then we worked out the missing part of 7 using the “5 and a bit” structure and finally we have seen that 7 can be composed in different ways and explained our understanding the composition of 7. Our Year 1 children started the week representing the numbers 6 to 10 using the five and a bit structure, next we identified the whole and parts of the numbers 6-10 using the five and a bit structure, then we explored the numbers 6-10 using the part whole model and the five and a bit structure, finally we explained where 6,7,8 and 9 lie on a number line. In Science, we have learnt that animals are grouped together in ‘families’ based on shared properties and know that the names of the groups are: birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals and fish. We have been listening to this song to help us remember them - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VixROiu8Qg. We learnt that these animals are similar in that they have vertebrates and we have been identifying animals in each group that we can find in Barnsley and the wider world. In PSHE through oracy, we have explored the question “Why do I need to wash my hands?”. We started by sharing ideas with our talk partner about when we should wash our hands and then we learnt that germs are everywhere and that they are even on our hands. We know that germs are so small that we cannot see them and that if we do not wash them away then we can spread the germs and they will get into our bodies and make us poorly.
Our story of the week this week was ‘’Little Red Riding Hood”. This week our focus was on story goodies and story baddies – we could identify the Woodchopper as the story goodie and the wolf as the story baddie. We also listened to the story ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ where we identified Goldilocks as the baddie and the Bears as the goodies. Our Talk through Stories this week was ‘On the Way Home’ by Jill Murphy. We started by listening attentively to the story, we then identified the characters and explored what the problem was. We have enjoyed joining in with the favourite phrases and showing expressions in a freeze-frame when given a situation from the story. Our learning activities have included; using puppets in the small world area to retell the story, creating wanted posters, playing ‘what time is it Mr Wolf?’, making flowers using creative materials, weaving the ribbon in and out of Little Red Riding Hoods’ basket and playing a CVC game where we had to roll the dice, move our counter along and if we landed on a word we had to use our Fred Talk to read the word. We were also challenged to make a maze using the Duplo for the characters to go through - just like Little Red Riding Hood had to go through the forest to get to her grandmas house. In Literacy, our Year 1 children have started their new unit of learning where our end piece of writing will be a setting description. The children started the week listening to the traditional tale ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ where they then answered questions related to the story. Next, we were introduced to our text driver ‘Jim and the Beanstalk’, we looked at the cover and predicted what might happen within the story after listening to the story we compared how it was similar and different to the traditional story. We have also been introduced to conjunctions and know these join clauses/sentences together. Here we are hard at work completing our handwriting, red words and hold a sentence! In Maths, Reception children started the week looking at capacity where we used the language full, empty and nearly full and we can say that the taller containers don’t always hold more. Throughout the rest of the week we have subitised arrangements of 6 and not 6, ordered Numberblock images to 8, represented 8 as ‘5 and 3 more’, described how to place the numbers 1-8 in order, explained how to order quantities to 10, reasoned about which numbers are ‘more than’ others and noticed when numbers are increased or decreased and explained our thinking. Our Year 1 children have explored, discussed and compared 2D shapes, explored, discussed and identified circles and shapes that are not circles, explored, discussed and identified triangles and shapes that are not triangles and explored, discussed and compared quadrilaterals. In History, we learnt that the year 1666 was over 350 years ago and we know that this is the year that the Great Fire of London broke out. We looked at photographs of modern London and with our talk partners we discussed what we could see including; houses, buildings, transport and people. Next, we thought about why we don’t have photos of what London was like in 1666 (17th century) and we discovered that this was because cameras had not been invented! For our main task, we worked as a group to sort picture of past and present London. We discussed how the buildings were different in the past and how the people travelled differently. In PSHE, we have looked at the question ‘Why do I brush my teeth?’. We then spoke about how it is just as important to look after our teeth like we look after the rest of our body. We learnt that we need to brush our teeth twice a day and that brushing them gets rid of any food that is on our teeth that may cause them damage. We then listened to a song about brushing teeth – we know we go up and down, around and around and left to right! Then in our choosing time we practised cleaning dirt off some model teeth - we practised going up and down and all around!
Our story of the week this week was ‘’The Three Little Pigs”. We have enjoyed listening to and joining in with the favourite phrases throughout the week as part of Talk through Stories learning. The children are experts at identifying the characters and the problem in stories and are perfecting their expressions in freeze-frames when given a situation from the story! We have listened to an alternative version of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and we looked at how they were same and different. We identified that they were the same because there were still the same characters, the same problem, the pigs made houses of straw, stick and brick in both books. The differences we identified in the alternative version were that the pigs had names, that the first little pig went to the second little pigs stick house before they both went to the brick house, the wolf burnt his bottom on the pot of boiling water but managed to escape and that the pigs built a new big brick house so they could all live together! Our learning activities have included; using puppets in the small world area to retell the story, writing speech bubbles to show what the characters might say in the story, creating box house models and in the funky fingers area we have been using tweezers or our thumb and index fingers to move matchsticks to create different houses! We could also name different materials, we know a house is usually made of bricks and know that a house needs to be strong and waterproof. We have also enjoyed playing a game called "Run, run as fast as you could...". In Literacy, our Year 1 children have spent the week composing and holding sentences to describe several characters from ‘Snow White in New York’. We have really focused on ensuring our sentences have letters formed correctly, capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. The children have successfully included the prefix ‘un’ in sentences about the wicked Stepmother! On Thursday we practised re-reading our sentences before reading them aloud to our peers! In Maths, Reception children started the week recapping previous learning on balance scales and using the language heavier, lighter, heaviest and lightest. Throughout the rest of the week we revisited the principles of counting, practised counting aloud and used statements such as ‘5 and 1 more makes 6 altogether’ to describe the ‘5 and a bit’ composition of numbers 6-8. We have investigated the ‘1 more/1 less’ pattern of the base-10 counting system and ordered numbers between 1 and 10, noticing the ‘5 and a bit’ structure. Our Year 1 children started the week investigating tetromino and pentomino arrangements. We know a tetromino arrangement is made up of 4 squares and a pentomino arrangement is made up of 5 squares. Next, we investigated ways that four cubes can be composed into different 3D models. We have explored, discussed and compared 3D shapes and identified the 2D shapes within 3D shapes. In Science, we named a variety of common animals including; pets, wild animals, farm animals and woodland animals.
In PSHE, we have looked at the question ‘Why are fruit and vegetables food for me?’ as part of our learning on being able to talk about things that help keep us healthy. We have learnt; that some foods are food for us and some are unhealthy for our body and teeth, fruit and vegetables have vitamins that our body needs to be healthy and we named different fruit and vegetables and some foods that are sweet and have lots of sugar in and we know these are bad for our teeth. |
