As a school, we started with an assembly to share the text 'The Planet in a Pickle Jar', which had a focus of building relationships and connections. From this, we returned to the classroom to start our exciting day! In the morning, we introduced ourselves and shared our learning for next year. Then, we decided our new class rules and created our 'helping hands' for our door display. After lunch, we designed our own pickle jar artwork, filling them with the things we enjoy! We ended the day by reading the story the children had previously voted for “The Gruffalos child.” It was a lovely day and the children were amazing! Roll on September!

We started by representing a number using the five and a bit layout. Next, we put that number into a story about bikes. Then, we identified that bikes have two wheels and correctly formed the digit two on each of our counters to represent the two wheels. After this, we counted our bikes to reveal how many groups of two we have and finally counted in multiples of two.

We enjoy telling stories in our maths learning and having lots of opportunity to talk.

Using an unmarked straight line that was measured at 20cm the children investigated the length of the lines that were dotted around the classroom. All the children were aware of was the length of line, so they had to imagine a number line with zero at the start, ten in the middle and 20 at the end. Using this line, the children were able to estimate the length of the lines on the carpet by discussing number neighbours and other facts that they have learned.

For example, 8 + 5. When we add two numbers which total more than 10 we use the “Make 10 and then” strategy. In order to use the Make ten strategy, we add or subtract the second number in two parts. The first part we add is always the amount we need to make ten. The second part we then add or subtract what’s left.
