Promoting British Values and Providing Rich Opportunities to Engage in  Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Learning.

Promotion of British Values

Picture
The Government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values were reiterated in 2014.  At Wombwell Park Street these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways.

Democracy
At Park Street we have a very proactive School Council. All Classes from Year 2 to Year 6 elect two Class Council representatives each year. These Class Council representatives attend regular School Council Meetings, presenting and representing their fellow classmates. The School Council are thoroughly integrated into whole school decision making. At Park Street we promote, listen to and respect the Pupil Voice. Our School Council genuinely effect change within the school. In school; Subject Leaders, Class Teachers and Senior Leaders consult pupils regularly to discuss the evolving curriculum, subject planning, behaviour management, transition and enrichment opportunities.

The Rule of Law
The importance of Laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout regular school days, as well as when dealing with behaviour and through school assemblies. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service help reinforce this message. Pupils and adults at our school actively support and follow our Golden Rules:
  • BE HONEST
  • BE KIND AND HELPFUL
  • LISTEN TO OTHERS
  • BE GENTLE
  • LOOK AFTER PROPERTY
Our comprehensive behaviour policy explains the wide range of positive behaviour strategies we use in school. We celebrate our ‘Always Pupils’ weekly in our Golden Book Assembly and hold half termly reward celebrations to recognise all our pupils who follow the Golden Rules.

Individual Liberty
Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safely, through provision of a safe environment and empowering education.  Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety, PLT Challenges and PSHE lessons. Whether it be through choice of learning challenge, of how they record, of participation in our numerous extra-curricular clubs and opportunities, pupils are given the freedom to make choices.

Mutual Respect
Mutual respect is at the heart of our values. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community treat each other with respect. This is again reflected through, school policies and our Golden Rules. It is not only the adults at our school who model respect for others; our Playground Leaders, Yellow Caps and Prefects actively model how to treat each other respectfully. Respect for others is celebrated in class, at playtime and during lunchtimes. Our SMSAs award weekly certificates to recognise respectful behaviour at lunch time.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs
At Park Street we place a great emphasis on promoting diversity with the children. Assemblies are regularly planned to address this issue either directly or through the inclusion of stories and celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures. Our RE, PSHE and Philosophy teaching reinforce this. In addition to these lessons we enjoy an annual Interfaith Week where students enjoy visiting different places of worship, meeting members from a range of faiths, cooking, engaging in arts and stories and exploring different festivals.  We are proud to say not only are different faiths and beliefs tolerated at our school they are regularly and actively celebrated.

At Park Street we will actively challenge pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including ‘extremist’ views.
Promoting British Values is somehting we take incredibly seroiusly here at Wombwell Park Street. Please find below our most recent British Values Audit.

VALUE OF THE WEEK:
This week we have been exploring Tolerance and Celebrating Diversity. What does it look like at Wombwell Park Street?

Whole school assembly: We kicked the week off with a special assembly from Miss Garratt who talked to the children about tolerance and Diversity and we unpicked what these things actually were. Miss Garratt set all the children and grown ups the challenge of taking part in a tolerance and diversity hunt. What does it look like at Park Street?
Arts Council leaning environment investigation: Mrs Longden and the Arts Council had a chat about what evidence for tolerance and respect for diversity might look like and then the council went on a thorough investigation. If they thought they had found a piece of evidence they discussed why it demonstrated promotion of tolerance or celebrated diversity and then added one of these labels...
Keep an eye out when you are around school. How many can you find? There are LOTS!!! One interesting point the council spotted on the South Yorkshire Hall of Fame we noticed nearly everyone on there was white - we wondered how this might change over the next 10 years.

Findings from some other classes:

Team LG:
After discussing as a class Year 5 came up with some examples of events and learning they have been involved with which they felt demonstrated tolerance and respect for diversity. They included: MfL lessons and learning about French traditions and culture. Learning about Islam in RE and learning about other faiths during Interfaith and Philosophy Week. They also thought fund raising and charity events showed tolerance and mutual respect for others who need help: Red Nose Day activities, Children In Need Day and Macmillan coffee mornings where children make and sell cakes and buns. AMAZING SUGGESTIONS YEAR 5!

Team AK: The children in Team AK wanted to let everyone know about some of the things they do to promote tolerance and celebrate diversity. They recently learnt all about Chinese New Year and had a go at Ribbon Dancing, learning Chinese words and numbers and enjoyed some traditional Chinese stories. We have some really talented children too. Max and Ale have been impressing the class with their Spanish and even teaching the class a few words. Antonina has been teaching the class about Poland and teaching them how to speak Polish. The class wanted everyone to know that they are proud of the diversity in their class. The class also have weekly circle time where all the children have the opportunity to share issues which they may need help with or even just to share something that is brilliant and special about them. AMAZING AND WELL DONE!

Team WP: Mrs Petitt would like to tell everyone that her Reception children are learning about tolerance and celebrating diversity in lots of different ways including: Lots of positive reward systems, circle time to discuss rules, feelings and to celebrate 'why we are special'. Pupils have the opportunity to take part in experience days and educational visits (Fiarytale day). Mrs Petitt has also mentioned what a huge success paired class learning sessions have been where pupils work alongside their peers in other classes across EYFS and lower KS1.
Team CMc Even our youngest pupils are learning about tolerance and diversity. Weekly Time to Shine sessions allow children and their parents to celebrate and share what is special about them. There is also a star of the week chosen by Miss McGinnes and that child is allowed to share what is special about them and  their family. Miss McGines explains this is a great way for children to understand how families may be different and celebrate those differences. There are lots of opporutnities for children to find out about other faiths, religions, cultures and celebrations in nursery including: Chinese New Year celebration, Divali and Eid activity days. Conflict resolution is modelled continually in nursery as is mutual respect for everyone.

Team AG: Team AG have been really busy. They spent extra time trying to really understand what Diversity and Tolerance mean. They have had a class meeting to decide what learning in these areas looks like in Team AG and have recorded their findings below. Well done Team AG!

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Education

Here at Park Street we feel our outstanding curriculum provides a wide range of rich and engaging learning opportunities. We are passionate about making sure that our pupils have the opporunity to develop their appreciation and understanindg of not only their own heritage and culture but the mix of heritage and culture present in our local school and community. We also want to allow them to explore the culture, beritage and traditions from around the world. We do this through our exciting integrated, enquiry based and very creative curriculum. In addition to this we provide lots of opportunities for exploration and enrichment - through educational visits, visitors and workshops in school, theatre performances, visits to art galleries the opportunity to work with artists, after school clubs, special theme weeks such as Inerfiath and Philosophy Week, Arts Week and International Celebration Days. We also enjoy celebrating many festivals and celebrations. For example we went red to celebrate Chinese New Year and children enjoyed traditional stories, made lanterns and decorations. Mrs Allen our RE subject lead has worked closely with staff to update our RE curriculum and pupils now have the opportunity to learn about even more world religions. We are also incredibly grateful to the support of parents who have contributed resources and expertise about their culture in order to help us educate our children. We feel the moral and social development of pupils is massively important and we include pupils with the development of our positive behaviour system. All our pupils understand why our Golden Rules are so important and pupils are proactive with supporting each other to maintain the highest standards of behaviour in order to ensure learning is the priority at all times. Pupils have the opportunity to develop their moral understainding social skills though well planned classroom activities, PE, PSCHE sessions and circle time, educational visits and extra-curricular opportunities.

We have recently audited the quality of the SMSC provision we have in place for our pupils. Please see the attached documents for further details. SMSC is essential and we contiually strive to monitor and develop it as part of ongoing school improvement.
