In Computing, we have been exploring how we can have the same commands in a different order and that the outcome would be different. To support us in understanding this, we used beebots and generated 4 different algorithms using the same command buttons to see where they ended up.

In computing we have worked in teams to create pathways for our robot mice and then used our programming skills to make them travel the correct way (this was lots of fun!).
In this lesson, students will explore the creative side of programming by designing, creating, and testing a mat for a floor robot. They'll learn that programming isn't just about code—it's also about the artwork and design that support the project. By customising their mats to fit different themes, students will develop a deeper understanding of how design choices impact functionality. They'll also practice testing their creations to ensure usability. Through this, students will connect art and code in an interactive, hands-on way.
https://www.wombwellparkstreet.co.uk/team-ch-blog-202425/previous/2 In Computing today, Team SG have been exploring desktop publishing.
The children have been: ●Changing font style, size, and colours for a party invite ●Editing text ●Changing text to communicate more clearly Take a look at their blog page for some photos of their learning. https://www.wombwellparkstreet.co.uk/team-sg-blog-202425 This week we began our new unit in Computing. The focus over this term is for children to focus on the skill of programming, with the aim to programming a robot by the end of the unit. In this week's learning, the class focussed on describing a series of instructions as a sequence. The class pretended to be robots, following their partner's instructions.
This week the children of Team JF started a new unit of learning - Robot Algorithms. To begin with we discussed instructions. From this, we started to think about how a computer would know what actions we wanted it to carry out. As learning progressed we took it in turns to role play in pairs. One person became the robot and the other person gave the instructions. The children found this incredibly useful to understand that all instructions had to be clear, sequenced and unambiguous.
This week the children have been learning about how robots can help us and how they need programming to do certain jobs.
In our Computing, we have been busy completing more branching databases now we have secured our understanding of how to form these. The class created their own data base linked to robots, using yes/no questions to sort the robots effectively.
Our computing focus for this half term is linked to branching databases. The children have worked hard over the last few weeks to explore different types of questions, including open and closed questions and the difference between them. We have then moved on this week to looking at how to use a branching database to physically sort information based on attributes. This was a challenging concept for the class, so next week we will continue this further, using online software to demonstrate this and provide further opportunity for the children to understand how the database works.
In our Maths group time today, we have been practising our noticing skills as well as counting carefully and recognising numbers. We played a game on the computer where we had to say how many sea creatures we could see and then click the matching numeral. Some children managed to say what they could see without counting them (by subitising) and there was lots of talk such as "I can see 2 at the top and 1 at the bottom- that's 3!" Very clever!
The game was left on the interactive whiteboard during provision time too and some children enjoyed playing independently. They learnt that they had to take turns as they found that it didn't work if more than one person clicked at once. |
