Team CH has been busy exploring the fascinating world of the Beaker People! They have researched their history, examined the changes in the Stone Age, and delved into the unique styles of Beaker pottery. You can see their amazing drawings below.
After learning about their techniques and designs, they got creative and designed and crafted their own pottery pieces. It’s been an exciting journey from investigation to creation!

Team CH have been exploring the fascinating history of cave paintings! They learnt that these ancient artworks, often created with natural materials like chalk, provide a glimpse into early human life and creativity. These paintings can be found in caves around the world, with some of the most famous examples located in places like Lascaux in France and Altamira in Spain.
Through their research, they discovered how these early artists used caves as canvases to tell stories, record events, and express their culture. It’s amazing to think about how these artworks have survived through thousands of years! This half term Team JF have started their new unit of significant people in the past. They carried out their pre unit assessment focusing on Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. From this they started exploring timelines. They looked at what a timeline is, why they are important and how to read dates. They also looked at their own timelines with a focus on significant events such as learning to walk, first words, first day at school etc. The children loved this!
Next they will start exploring Florence Nightingale with a focus on who she is and why she is important to our history. Year 6 have been learning about a significant individual from the past, the Bard himself; William Shakespeare!
Wombwell Park Street is a member of the Yorkshire and Humberside Shakespeare hub. Each year we focus on one of the bards many plays and engage with creative partners to develop themes. This year the children in Year 6 learnt about the twists and turns of 'A Midsummer Nights Dream'. The children got to grips with the characters and plot brilliantly. They were lucky enough to engage in a workshop with Lucy Burns a visual artist. She supported the children to use collage and print making skills to explore the forest and town of Athens. The work the children produced will form part of an installation, which will be presented in the central library in town. What a fantastic opportunity to learn about such a significant individual and the legacy he left to us today! In Y6 over the Autumn Term we looked at the chronology of some famous natural disasters and focused specifically on the eruption of Mt Vesuvius and its impact on Pompeii and Herculanium. We explored sources of evidence including letters from Pliny sent at the time.
This half term we have started our learning about the Ancient Egyptians. We completed our pre-unit assessment and carried out some independent research. We have explored the geography of where Ancient Egypt is on modern maps. We have unpicked the chronology of where Ancient Egypt fits in with other historical periods covered by the children so far and looked at similarities and differences. We have placed key events from Ancient Egypt on a timeline. Next week we will be exploring the structure of ancient Egyptian society In Team AC we have started to look at 'life in the past' as part of our history work. We thought of what we have learnt before about life in the past and anything we would like to learn about this term. We introduced the word 'significant' and thought about what the word means - we have used this to introduce the idea of significant people in history who have been remembered for what they have achieved.
Team AC thought about any famous people they knew and talked about why they were famous. We decided we could find out about people from the past using the internet, books, photos and drawings and also by asking people. The first person we have studied is Florence Nightingale - we have watched videos about her life and read a book to find information. We really enjoyed thinking of questions to ask and drawing pictures of her. In Geography Team SG have been finishing off their Europe topic. They have studied Wombwell and Athens. Within this study they looked at both cities in the past and discussed the changes that have occurred over the years. They used both Digimaps and Google Maps to do this.
In history, they have considered what they want to learn about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. As a hook to learning, they learnt about how they wrote and have practiced writing in runes and compared their alphabet to ours. What a fantastic legacy they left us! In EYFS the children follow Understanding the World objectives, which are the building blocks to learning about history in Key Stage 1.
Rainbows will be developing their understanding of chronology and how things change over time. They are going to be developing their observation skills, and in turn their vocabulary to help them explain what they observe. Rainbows will be seeing what happens to pieces of bread when they are placed in a sealed bag over a number of weeks. They also placed some of their fruit waste from snack time in bags to observe what happens. Their experiment will continue over the next couple of weeks and they will keep us updated on our findings. Observational skills are very important as they are key to historians understanding life in the past. The experiment will also help develop their understanding of chronology and help develop their vocabulary by understanding and using words such as; first, next, then, finally, before, after, a long time ago, in the past. Watch this space for updates! This Term year 4 and 5 are learning all about the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons!
During art they investigated what Viking ships looked like and all the different elements that made up a Viking ship. They then practised drawing one and labelling the different sections of ship. Next they will be looking the different shapes and sizes of ships. Their overall focus will be to sketch a Viking ship using charcoal using shading to create texture. Also during this term we will develop further knowledge of shape and form when modelling and constructing for larger scale models. We will select appropriate materials and research historical evidence to produce boat and shield designs relatively accurate to the period. In History, Team EO have explored what makes a person significant.
They know that a significant person is someone who is key to an individual life. They know there are different reasons why people might become important such as; improving lots of people’s lives and having a lasting impact. They will develop their knowledge by learning about the nurse Florence Nightingale over the next few weeks and how she shaped nursing care and what her legacy is. |
