In History, Team EO thought about how Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole has contributed to society. They know that Florence Nightingale taught other nurses and doctors about the importance of hygiene in hospitals. Florence Nightingale opened a training school and trained other nurses which improved the care patients received in hospitals. They know these significant individuals worked hard to care for the ill and injured soldiers in difficult conditions. Team EO know that we remember them in lots of different ways; statues, monuments, museums and hospitals named after them.

To help Rainbows understand chronology and the passing about time, they have been learning about dinosaurs and have had the opportunity to look at some real fossils! They know that dinosaurs lived millions of years ago, before people existed and that the world was a very different place. They know that the dinosaurs died out and became extinct. Rainbows know that now, people called palaeontologists dig up dinosaur bones and fossils and that helps us to understand what they looked like. This is called evidence and helps to build a picture of life a long time ago before people were alive and could record things. The vocabulary Rainbows focused on are; a long time ago, history, in the past, millions of years ago, extinct, evidence, palaeontologist. There are some more photos of us looking at fossils in the dinosaur provision blog post on Team CW's page.
Florence Nightingale ExperienceThursday 20th March saw year 1 and 2 take part in an exciting day where they learnt all about the life of Florence Nightingale to further enrich the work already done through their lessons. The children were given the option to dress as a child of the Victorian period to fully emerse themselves in the history of that time. The children were split into two groups and each group spent time with Kathryn who talked to them about what the life and conditions would have been like for Florence. They discovered why she decided to become a nurse and the legacy ands importance of her work. Each group listened intently and asked and answered questions about Florence's life and work. They all had tasks to complete including:
As part of their history unit, the children were given the exciting opportunity to take part in a workshop. A lovely lady from the History Van came into school to bring this historical period to life! To begin with, the children were able to explore what life what life was like during this time. They were given the opportunity to try on many different items of clothing, complete the washing, iron the linen and even scrub the pots! Some of the children were quite shocked when they realised just how much hard work it actually was! From this, they started to explore hospitals during this time. The children were given the task of role playing a ward during the Crimean War. They were absolutely incredible at this! They threw themselves into role as wounded soldiers and nurses and began to carry out the daily duties.
During the afternoon, the children wrote letters using a quill and ink to experience what writing was like during this time period. Finally, the last session included how medicines were made and how herbal remedies were used. The children each made their own lavender bag to take away too! Team JF LOVED this day and it was a great addition to their learning to really secure their understanding of this significant period of history! During Spring term in Team JD we have focused on The Anglo-Saxons and Vikings.
Key learning objectives they have covered so far are: Describing when and why the Anglo-Saxons invaded Britain - They have identified the key events in Anglo-Saxon history, written sentences to show their understanding and labelled a map to show the Anglo-Saxons Kingdoms. They have compared and contrasted current maps of England with Anglo-Saxon examples, identified evidence of Anglo-Saxon existence through suffixes in current towns and cities. Team JD have also determined where current towns and cities are in respect of Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms. Finally, they identified the different roles in Anglo-Saxon society, recalled the significant facts about their different roles, and the importance of their different roles. They are super proud of our work! What do you think?? In History Team EO have compared the lives of Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. One way they said that they were similar was they were both determined women who travelled to the Crimea to help during the war. One way they said they were different was Mary used plants and herbs to treat soldiers whereas Florence did not.
