The Sunshine's were amazed to see how much their climbing bean plants had grown overnight when they entered school this morning!
Today they sent the climbing bean plants home for the children to take care of and so that they can continue to observe them! The children know that the bean plants need water, light and air to grow! They have observed them beginning to grow roots and shoot and some have already grown a stalk and leaves! These changes have happened quite quickly and they are excited to see what will happen next!

Team CW and Team EO have planted some beans this week as part of their lifecycles topic.
Over the next few weeks they will observe any changes they can see and what they think they might see next. Check back here for updates! In our History this week Team CB focussed on the national celebration of VE day. In class they spent time learning about what VE day stood for, why we celebrate it and how it is commemorated. They created their own handheld flags and took these on to the field in the afternoon for a whole school celebration with drinks and biscuits.
hildren looked perfect for the occasion as they dressed in their red, white and blue clothes to represent the Union Jack. Last week in Team AC they celebrated the 80th anniversary of VE day. On Wednesday 7th May the day before VE day they dressed in red, white and blue to celebrate the end of the war in Europe 80 years ago. The children watched videos and news clips of that time. They looked at old photographs and learnt about why this day was so important to us in the UK and around Europe. The children thought about what life might have been like during the war and then what is was like to have been a child on VE day. They used this for their literacy work to think of and write questions to ask the children of that time.
Later they made bunting and hats using the colours red, white and blue, while listening to the music of that time, ready for the picnic with all the rest of the school. They had a wonderful time chatting, singing and playing games on the school field. What a lovely way to celebrate such an important event. This week Team CW's learning has been about VE Day, which is the end of the war in Europe. They know this is not the end of WW2 and that is in August as the war was still continuing in the Far East.
They listened to some air raid sirens and discussed what it was like to live in the war. They know that cities and some towns weren't safe to live in in case aeroplanes dropped bombs on the houses so children had to be evacuated to the countryside. Rainbows said they would miss their parents and were shocked when they learnt that they probably couldn't speak to them on a phone and would have to write them a letter. They were also shocked to learn that food had to be rationed and sweets weren't available like they are today. They learnt that clothes had to be mended when they had holes and were not thrown away like they are today. They looked at photos of Anderson and Morrison shelters and talked about what they thought it would be like to go through experiences like they did in the 1940's. They very much enjoyed the whole school celebration on the field with biscuits and juice and took part in duck duck goose with their friends. This week the Rainbows have been guessing what the mystery object from the past is! They were shown a shoe last and first had to discuss what material it was made out of. They correctly guessed metal and said that metal is strong. They then discussed the shapes they could see and what it reminded them off. They spoke with their partner about what they thought it could be used for and Jasper and George H correctly guessed it was for making shoes!
Rainbows talked about how life in the past was different and that there weren't always the same materials that we have now and that there were not factories with machines in the past like there are now. They know that instead of throwing something away and replacing it, that a long time ago most people used to fix what they had. They know that show lasts are used know by cobblers but not as often as they were in the past. The Shooting Stars, Rainbows and Sunshines were very excitedly waiting for our delivery of eggs today. They looked at photos and talked about what they think will happen.
In the afternoon, the eggs finally arrived and the children had the chance to observe them closely in the incubator. They had lots of lovely discussion and there was lots of excitement too! We cannot wait to see what changes we can observe over time! These observations and discussions will help develop the building blocks for historical knowledge and understanding including the concept of chronology. |
