In this weeks History lesson, Team CB have conducted an archaeological dig this week. They went hunting for primary sources of evidence about what life might have been like in the Stone Age. They discussed what they thought the items were, what they were made from and how they were used. This enabled them to build a picture of what life might have been like back in the Stone Age. The class were thoroughly excited to share their findings! Team CB also spent time learning about life in the Stone Age from secondary sources as they watched videos about how flint was used effectively.

Team LF visited Whitby and the children had chance to visit the harbour, town and Abbey grounds. During the trip, the children also had the chance to walk up the iconic 199 steps and visit Whitby Abbey to take part in an educational workshop led by the Abbey staff.
The children learnt about why the abbey was founded and how it has changed through time. They investigated evidence of the Anglo-Saxon monastery, learnt about the different techniques that can tell us about the past, explored what life was like in the later Benedictine monastery and imagined what life was like for a monk. In their History work this week, Team CB spent more time exploring the idea of chronology. They looked at what timelines are and why we need them before taking key events and dates from the Stone Age to Roman Era and plotting them accordingly on the table timeline. They referred to dates which had BC and AD after them and discussed what they meant and how this supported date ordering. They then looked at how some dates may happen at the same time or overlap.
Next week they will move on more to exploring the early Stone Age. This week Team CB started their new history topic on the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. As a class they explored why these times were considered prehistory. They looked at the word in detail to understand the prefix ‘pre’ meaning before and that history is a study of the past. They talked about if it was before studies of the past this meant that there was no written record. As a class they agreed this could be a tricky time to learn about with no written accounts, but using the bin as a prop we discovered the role of archaeologists. They used the bin to discuss how there is a lot to be learned from items left behind and what these can tell us about life – this is how we know so much about the Ages. As a class, they then looked in more detail at what the Ages were, the order they occurred and the duration they lasted. To support their understanding, they created a human timeline and look at the length each of these lasted in comparison with each other.
