History in Team CB - Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age

28/11/2024

In Team CB they have been busy working on their History topic looking at life in the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. As a class they have explored how early civilisation used stone to support their daily lives. Looking closely at the different time periods in the Stone Age they investigated how people went from being nomads to living in permanent houses, and growing crops. They looked closely at the make up of roundhouses and even created their own using clay and straw to replicate the wattle and daub effect.

They also examined different artefacts from the time and used their inferencing skills to deduce what the items were and what they told us about history of the time. Using a virtual tour tool, they explored Skara Brae and learnt of the power of such sites in retelling the past.

As part of the Bronze Age they used drama to support their understanding of what it would be like to be a copper child and then documented their thoughts and feelings in the form of a diary.

Finally, as part of the Iron Age they looked at hillforts and their design in supporting tribes with defending their land. They re-enacted an attempt to invade and the challenges that the hillfort posed. For the remainder of the term they will study how the Romans came to Britain and the impact they had upon our lives as we know them.

Remembrance in Team CW

15/11/2024

Team CW have been learning about Remembrance Day this week. They have been using the phrases " a long time ago" and "in the past." The children know that in the past, soldiers fought in wars to help keep people safe and that we wear poppies remember them. They know that people wear different colour poppies to help remember different people and animals. The children made red and purple poppies to remember people and animals and wore them around school to show other children and adults they are thinking about soldiers from the past and haven't forgotten them.

Building Blocks to History in Nursery.

14/11/2024

This term so far Shooting Stars have been learning about "Families."

Before EYFS children learn about "history" as a topic, they need to learn the building blocks beforehand to support their knowledge and understanding.

To help them learn about the world around us they have discussed who their family are, including their immediate and extended family. They know that they started as a baby and grew into a toddler and know they are a child. They know that children grow up into adults and get older. They learnt about where they live and familiar places they see and visit. All of this enables them to build a bigger picture of their world which in turn will help them to see how it changes and how other aspects can fit into it.

Each week, Shooting Stars review their learning using their learning journey on their display. The learning journey allows the children to see what they have learnt throughout the week so they can discuss where their learning started and how they built on it as the week progressed. It also enables the children to begin to understand the concept of chronology and they have been using words including "first" "then" and "next."

Remembrance and Bonfire Night in Nursery

13/11/2024

Shooting Stars have been learning that events happened in the past and have been using the words " a long time ago."

They know that we wear poppies now to remember people that lived a long time ago. They know that people can wear different colour poppies including red and purple.

Shooting Stars know that we have fireworks and bonfire parties to remind people of an event that happened a long time ago and that is important we remember it as we grow up.

Team JF Remembrance Day

12/11/2024

Team JF spent an afternoon discussing and exploring Remembrance Day. The children were very keen to learn and understand more about this historic event. During this time they explored many different aspects and answered the children's questions such as;
Why this day is significant?
Why do we have a silence?
Why do we wear a poppy?
What was the role of animals during this time?

From this, the children completed some artwork linked to this and we were even lucky enough to have Mr Fidment speak about his role each year within the Cadets and watch some clips of him marching in previous parades.

Team JD Remembrance Day

12/11/2024

In Team JD they spent time on Friday making their own Poppies, having time to think about the soldiers that have fallen for us to have a future of freedom and values.
Then yesterday, on Monday 11th November 2024, they spent the morning focusing on the Remembrance day and the reasons why we emphasis the importance of this day.
They created a poster on the important key facts and watched the Remembrance Sunday at the Cenotaph in London. Then they had a minute silence at 11am throughout school.

Remembrance Day

11/11/2024

Team AC thought about Remembrance Day and why it is important that we remember the past each year at this time. We looked at videos and read books about remembrance day. We asked questions about what happened at that time and how people lived. Poppies are a significant part of Remembrance Day so we found out why and decided to do our own poppy artwork for  a display so we could remember the people in the wars around the world.

History Day 2024

10/11/2024

Wednesday 6th November was whole school history day at Park Street Primary School. This year we asked children to think about inspirational people either from the past or people who inspire them today. This could be anyone from any profession or any part of their life. The children were asked to come dressed as their inspirational person and share ideas about why this person inspires them. We had an amazing response from all the children who really thought about their ideas carefully. They were all able to talk about their inspirational person in detail many having done lots of research about the person. Children were also asked to complete a page for a class booklet all about themselves to be added to the class time capsule along with other items and photographs that were special to them. The day ended with a whole school assembly to bring all the ideas together and for children to be able to share their ideas with other year groups. It was amazing to see all the effort and hard work all the children at Park Street had put into the history day and just shows what inspirational children we have in school. Thank you!

Y6 Time Capsule History Day

8/11/2024

Team LL and Team AF thoroughly enjoyed our whole school history day. They got to come dressed as people who inspired us. They also added to a time capsule. They thought about the future: what they might achieve by the end of the year, the jobs they may do, how tech might evolve, what their grown up lives might be like. They have dropped their work into a time capsule and will leave it there ready to revisit in the future!
