In this session, Team SG discovered the meaning of perimeter and how to find this in different shapes. They collected leaves from Park Street’s playground, applying their learning to real life objects, and drew around the leaves using chalk. Team SG were introduced to the idea that perimeter is ‘the distance around the outside of a 2D shape’, and that measuring perimeter of a shape without straight sides (not a polygon) can be incredibly difficult.

Teams AF and LL have been going fraction crazy for the past few weeks. They have been learning how to add and subtract fractions with different denominators by finding the lowest common multiple. They have also have been multiplying and dividing fractions giving answers in their simplest form (by finding the highest common factor). Year 6 are pretty good at converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa.
In Year 3 maths by working with three addends! We’ve been practicing how to make it easier to add by unitising and adjusting three-digit numbers. This means breaking the numbers into hundreds, tens, and ones, and making smart adjustments to simplify the addition. By using this strategy, we’ve become quicker and more confident in adding larger numbers and have developed a better understanding of place value.
Year two have been solving problems using multiples of 2, 5, and 10 to help us with multiplication and division. By using these multiples, we’ve been able to solve word problems more easily and understand how numbers fit together. It’s been fun building our confidence with these important times tables and using them to solve everyday problems. This week in Year 4, Team JD have focused on subtracting three 4-digit numbers, practicing our column subtraction skills. In Year 5, the children have been working hard in the topic of money; looking at the various coins and notes in the UK, as well as understanding the relationship between pounds and pence.
This week Team JF have worked really hard to master the skill of subtraction. To begin with, we explored the subtraction symbol and what it actually meant. From this, we were able to identify many different words used for subtraction such as minus, take away and subtract. As the week progressed, we moved into completing a range of subtraction calculations by partitioning our tens and ones.
In maths this week, Team DB have put the finishing touches to their learning about the topic of money. The children have applied the different strategies (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to reasoning problems.
