This week Team JF started to explore numbers as a length. We used bead strings to help us identify various numbers to 100. We applied our knowledge of counting in tens and ones to do this with speed. From this, we started to identify the length of our lines using the beads to help us and describe the length we had. We then had the challenge of working out the length of the line our partner drew using the beads and describing it using our key vocabulary.
From this, we introduced a meter stick and started to investigate 100cm. We initially spotted patterns and quickly realised we could simply apply our knowledge of the number system to identify a length. From this we started to estimate numbers just as we did on a number line by finding the middle, knowing this was 50. As part of our learning, we explored the classroom to begin estimating the lengths on the tables! Some of us even set challenges for everyone else!

In Maths, our Year 1 children have been introduced to the equality and inequality symbols (<, > and =). We have used them to compare sets of objects and to compare expressions. In Maths, our Reception children have practised subitising amounts to 4, revisited ‘more than’ or ‘fewer than’ by looking, compare groups of up to 3 objects by matching them 1:1, said when they have an equal number, built towers with an equal number of squares, matched the squares in the towers 1:1 and said when there is an equal number, too many or not enough.
The children in Team AC have been learning how to work out the difference, counting up from the smaller number to the larger number.
This week we have been counting for a cardinal purpose we have set out around school counting, steps, seconds, shoes, bags, tables and chairs. We are all becoming really strong at carefully counting a total number of objects. We were able to gather data from our counting and talk about the greatest total of seconds it takes to get somewhere, which classroom had the least amount of coats, how are steps increased when walking forwards but decreased when walking backwards and identify the smallest number.
Team CH have continued being up an active in our counting! Practicing ordinal counting each day has really helped us in becoming familiar with the flow, sound and sequence of numbers. Additionally, our daily counting has supported us in counting in multiples of 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.
We have enjoyed being up and active as we learnt to join in with a song about height and length. We know that height measures how tall something is and that length measure how long something is. We put actions to the words to help us remember there meaning! Our activities included marking our height on a piece of paper that was stuck to the wall and we could identify who we were taller than and who was shorter than us. We also used straws to blow cotton wool balls and discussed which ball travelled the longest distance and which travelled the shortest distance. We have been making comparison between children in our class and have discussed and answered ‘who is the tallest?’ and ‘who is the shortest?’. During maths this week, we did some practical investigation. Working has a team to we measured out water to see how many millilitres are in a litre. Then applying that to real life, how many 1's make up 10, 10's make up 100 and how many 100's make a thousand. The children really enjoyed the visual investigation which then supported them during their maths learning throughout the week.
In Maths, we have had a focus on counting, ordinality and cardinality. We know that the last number in the count tells us ‘how many’ things there are altogether in a set of objects – and we have practised their 1:1 correspondence skill, by counting numbers at the same time as moving or tagging objects. We know that we have 5 fingers on one hand and that ‘5 and 5 makes 10 altogether’. In Maths, we have; explained that items can be compared using length and height, explained that items can be compared using weight/mass and volume/capacity, practised counting a set of objects and compared a set of objects. This week in Team AC, the children have been learning about addition and subtraction by rounding up or down to the nearest 10. As well as our weekly times table practise - this week focusing on 2x table.
Over the past couple of weeks Team JF have been working incredibly hard to identify numbers on a number line. We initially started by identifying multiples of ten on a marked line but as we mastered this skill, moved into ones too! As our learning progressed, we moved into exploring unmarked number lines and how we could estimate the position of numbers on these too!
This week we have rounded up our learning by challenging our children to complete number sequences stretching to 120. We are ready for out next steps in learning and will be introducing Unit 2 next week of comparing quantities and measures. Additionally, we will be introducing whole and parts.
