In Maths, our Reception children have practised subitising amounts to 4, revisited ‘more than’ or ‘fewer than’ by looking, compare groups of up to 3 objects by matching them 1:1, said when they have an equal number, built towers with an equal number of squares, matched the squares in the towers 1:1 and said when there is an equal number, too many or not enough. Here we are comparing groups of 3 objects by matching them 1:1. In Maths, our Year 1 children have been introduced to the equality and inequality symbols (<, > and =). We have used them to compare sets of objects and to compare expressions. We have also been exploring a whole object, parts of an object and learnt to explain that a whole can represent a group of objects.

This week, in Team AC we have learnt about the three equality and inequality symbols (= meaning equal, < meaning less than and > meaning greater than). We used cubes to show two amounts and decided which symbol we needed to use.
In Maths, Team CB have been exploring measure as our focus. We have looked at what we understand measure to be and then focused more specifically on measurement using a meter ruler. We discussed when it would and would not be appropriate to use this type of ruler and spent time outside and in the classroom measuring various objects, ensuring our ruler was at 0 and we could accurately read off the ruler to measure correctly. To extend our understanding, we then looked at how many cm in 1 m and converted between the two. We will be continuing with this when we return after half term.
This week, the Maths team are pleased to announce that our younger children of Park Street have been practising their maths skills using the Numbots aspect of TTRS. So, without further ado, here are this week's certificate holders:
Team EO - Tobias Team AC - Olivia Team JF - Iyra-Rae Team CH - Jenson Team CB - Ivy Team SG - Lewis Team JD - Kacper Team DB - Ella Team LL - Edie Team AF - Mason Furthermore, we also have our Most Improved over the Half Term Certificate holders: Team JF - Iyra-Rae Team CH - Jenson Team CB - Rory Team SG - Oscar S Team JD - Kacper Team DB - Eliza Team AF - Keira Team LL - Evelyn And lastly, a huge well done to the Team of the Week, Team JD! Congratulations to all of the children at Park Street for your continuing practise of your maths and timestables at home. Enjoy your half term break! We have been busy mathematicians this week in Team AC, as we have been learning all about measurement and having a look at who was the tallest and the shortest person in Team AC. We marked all our heights on a class chart. We then thought about things around us which are taller and shorter than us.
This week in Team CB, we have been looking at the concept of 10 less and 10 more this week. We have explored the patterns relating to this and how the value of the 10s column changes according to whether you want more or less. We have also started to add and subtract multiples of 10 from a number using our column method skills. This is good practice for later in the year where we will begin to explore this in more depth. Next week, we will be continuing our learning on place value and will begin to explore measurement.
In Maths, we have had a focus on counting, ordinality and cardinality. We know that the last number in the count tells us ‘how many’ things there are altogether in a set of objects – and we have practised their 1:1 correspondence skill, by counting numbers at the same time as moving or tagging objects. We know that we have 5 fingers on one hand and that ‘5 and 5 makes 10 altogether’. In Maths, we have; explained that items can be compared using length and height, explained that items can be compared using weight/mass and volume/capacity, practised counting a set of objects and compared a set of objects. Here we are finding objects that are longer/shorter than our pencils! Here we are using the balance scales to find out which object is the lightest/heaviest. Here we are practising counting objects using our 1:1 correspondence! Y1 Mastering Number!
In our afternoon Mastering Number sessions, we have practised making and recalling doubles up to double 5. Another amazing week from the Park Street timestable superstars! Here are this week's certificate holders:
Team CH - Natalia Team CB - Lillie Team SG - Georgie Team JD - Kacper Team DB - Noah Team LL - Jenson Team AF - Keira This week's Team of the Week goes to... Team SG! Huge congratulations to you all! In our Mastering Number learning, Y1's have explored representations of the ordinal aspect of number: first, via a ‘staircase’ pattern made with Numberblocks, then using towers of cubes and a number track to deepen their understanding of ordinality. We have explored this to consolidate our understanding that the order of the counting numbers is ‘fixed’ or ‘stable’ and can be used to help identify the numbers which are ‘1 more’ and ‘1 less’ than a given number.
In Maths we have been counting on from and across 100. The class noticed patterns in number when doing this which is continuing to support and strengthen their place value understanding. We have also further reinforced our understanding of addition and subtraction using part whole models and bar models to complete missing number problems linked to what we have learned so far. Next week we will begin to look at finding 10 more and 10 less before moving on to looking more specifically at measure.
