As part of our learning about faith, British Values, respect and tolerance team JD had some visitors in school to teach them about Islamic faith. 'National Black History Month 2023 - Celebrating our sisters'
To celebrate National Black History Month, Team LF initially discussed what it means to be black and British. We focussed on Black and Mixed Heritage British women who have shaped history, learning about their achievements and accomplishments. This included influential sportswomen, politicians and activists, scientists, artists, presenters and musicians. We then dug a bit deeper into four women in particular - Rosa Parks, Nina Simone, Claudia Jones and Tessa Sanderson. We used our knowledge from Computing (systems and searching) to find out key information about these women in order to create fact files. This week is assemblies we have been focussing on racism. Monday assembly started with sharing the inspirational story of Baljaj. On friday the school community is wearing red to show our support of the Show racism the red card campaign. This week was the beginning of Black History Month.
Assemblies introduced the Month with stories about inspirational Black figures from history and today. For the youngest children in our school community we have enjoyed listening to stories about coming to live in the UK from abroad and thinking about the journeys some of our families have made to live here in Wombwell. We particularly enjoyed the story of Floella Bengamin and how she remembers her first weeks in the UK as a child. Each class in school has Incredible us time on a Friday afternoon. Its good to see that Team JD are having so much fun in this weekly time.
