This month is has been Black History Month. This year’s theme for Black History Month is “Reclaiming Narratives,” and marks a significant shift towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture. In school classes have focussed on learning about a Black historical figure and those who are shaping policy and shining a light on achievement in the present day. Year 1 are looking at the achievements of current Black celebrities and sporting heroes. Year 6 are focussing on the words and meaning behind Martin Luther Kings famous speech " I had a dream." Year 2 This week the children have continued to explore friendships. We initially recapped our prior sessions focusing on what makes us unique, how it is important to be different and how we are enough. From this, we started to think about what makes a caring friend? We used the story 'Meesha Makes Friends' to open the discussion of caring friends and how to make new friends. Today Y4 had an action-packed RampUp session, where they learned crucial road safety tips and mastered new scooter skills! They spent 30 minutes learning all about road safety and then took to the ramps, trying out exciting scooting moves.
Reception - Team CW This week we listened to I Am Enough by Grace Byers and A Little Light by Andrew Newman. We know we are all different, and that some things are tricky and take a long time to learn. We know that we are enough, even if we become upset if we can't do things the first time. We imagined we have a little light inside our tummy that helps us to shine bright and be our self and be happy. Sometimes that light needs some help to shine bright so we practised some breathing exercises to help reset our mind. This Year we have embarked on a new PSHE journey with Educational Consultant Kelly Wood. Kelly is passionate about Mental health and the importance, in particular of teaching strategies for good mental health to children. Kelly has created a scheme for Primary school children that she has titled One Life. This scheme provides weekly focussed lessons to each year group. The main focus will be either mental, physical or social fitness. Kelly is also passionate about teaching oracy and so this is also a key component of her scheme. Oracy and mental health are areas that we at Park Street at also passionate about and so we have j0ined other schools in the ECM trust in using the One Life PSHE scheme for 24 to 25. Team CW read two books this week, Somebody Swallowed Stanley and Somebody Crunched Colin to help us learn about caring for the environment and the impact that litter has.
They had lots of fun taking part in different activities during provision time. These included writing items of litter that they needed to put in the bin, sorting litter into different groups to recycle; metal, paper, plastic. They even washed and reused their milk cartons instead of throwing them in the bin! You can see some of their models below. |
