In Year 6 we have been focusing on learning about Christianity. We have been finding out why the bible is so important to Christians. We have learnt that there is an old testament and a new testament. We also learnt about the Lindisfarne gospels. We enjoyed reading the story of Daniel in the lion’s den and contemplated on what could be learnt from this story. We have also explored Martin Luther King Jr’s importance to Christians and why his ‘I have a dream’ speech was so powerful. We have enjoyed asking and considering some ‘big questions’

In Team LF, we have made a really positive start to our RE learning and our focus on Christianity. We were lucky to visit St Mary’s Church in Whitby whilst on our Geography trip this September. Volunteers from the Parish were kind enough to talk to us about the history of the church and the people who worshipped their in the past. They discussed the layout of the church and the important features, explaining to us why certain features were newer than others. The volunteers also told us about the one stained glass window of the church and why there are no others. We are looking forward to visiting St Mary’s Church in Wombwell and comparing it to the one we visited whilst in Whitby.
Team JF have made a great start to our RE learning this term. Our Autumn focus is Christianity. As a class, we began by completing our pre unit assessment to identify what we already knew. In addition to this, we found it a great opportunity to ask lots of questions about our chosen faith. This week we moved into sharing some special stories from the Bible. Initially, we spoke of how the Bible was a holy book and how each story had a special meaning. We listened to and discussed; ‘The Baby in the Temple’ and ‘King Herod’ from The New Testament.
In Team JD, we have completed our pre-unit assessment which
highlighted the areas we have already looked at in previous years, as well as key vocabulary and what we would like to know more about both Islam and Christianity. We have looked into ‘special places’ in Christianity and Islam. We are really looking forward to visiting St Mary’s Church in Wombwell and comparing it to the church in Whitby with the same name. This term we will learn about the Christian festival of Christmas. We will learn the Christmas story and how it is celebrated. We will also learn about the Hindu festival of Diwali. We will learn the story of Rama and Sita and how Diwali is celebrated by communities in the UK and around the world.
In Team DB, we have completed our pre-unit assessment which
highlighted the areas we have already looked at in previous years, as well as key vocabulary and what we would like to know more about Christianity. We have discussed in detail the Christian festivals, remembering the Nativity we recreated when in Team CW. We also discussed the importance of Easter and how this is to remember the crucifixion and the resurrection of Jesus. We recently went to Whitby where we visited the infamous Whitby Abbey, and learned more about the Benedictine Monks who once housed there. We are looking forward to visiting St Mary’s Church in Wombwell in the coming weeks, so that we can compare this to the St Mary’s church at Whitby. This term we will learn about the Christian festival of Christmas. We will learn the Christmas story and how it is celebrated. We will also learn about the Hindu festival of Diwali. We will learn the story of Rama and Sita and how Diwali is celebrated by communities in the UK and around the world.
In Team CH, we have made a really positive start to our RE learning this term. Our Autumn focus is Christianity. As a class, we began by revisiting what we already knew about the faith and then explored the idea of the Church as a special place for Christians. We looked closely at different features you might find inside a church before visiting St Mary’s, where we were able to spot these features in real life and learn more about the church’s history and importance to Christians. During our visit, we also produced detailed sketches of some of the features we saw.
In Team CB, we have made a really positive start to our RE learning. During Autumn, our focus is on Christianity. So far as a class we have recapped what existing knowledge we have of the faith and started to explore the idea of the Church being a special place for Christians. We spent time looking at some features you would find within a Church, before heading to St Mary’s where we located these items and learnt more about this history of the church and its significance to Christians. We produced some detailed sketches of features within the church.
This term we have been learning about special words. We started by discussing what we knew about RE and what it means. We talked about what we had learnt before and shared our ideas. Then we decided that different faiths had special books that they used to tell the important messages and stories of their faith. For Christians the special book is called a Bible. We looked at different bibles and listened to stories from the Bible such as Noah’s Ark, Jonah and the Whale and The Good Samaritan.
These stories had messages of goodness, hope, love and kindness which we know are special words . |
