As we find ourselves in the unprecedented times why not check out the following packs which seek to support our learners in continuing to develop their reading and writing skills at home.

Thank you to all the children and grown ups who have visited our book fair over the last few days. It has been lovely to share in the excitement of choosing new books and it has created a real enthusiasm for reading among the children of Park Street.
For every book sold, we can gain commission to earn new books for school. Please look out for the grand total we have raised over the next few days! We cannot wait to get some exciting new books in school. During book week, the parents and carers of children in EYFS and KS1 were invited into school to share books with their children. What a fantastic turn out we had!
Thank you to all the grown ups who were able to join us; I know the children really love spending time with you in school. During the Spring Term, the class topics have been Magical Storyland and Amazing Animals! As a class, the children have loved reading lots of different Fairy Tales and Traditional Tales. Their favourite story was Robin Hood, as they read about the different characters and even got to meet some of them as they came to visit the class! The class have also been learning about animals and have read Rumble in the Jungle. They have read non-fiction books to learn facts about different animals including wild animals and pets. During this term, Team CC have had lots of mystery readers in their class, including staff, parents and other family members. The class simply love listening to stories and are never sure who will come to read them a story at the end of the day!
During the Spring term, Team AF have been continuing with the fantastic progress they have been making in their phonics. The class have been working hard to secure their recall of set 3 sounds and applying this in their early reading sessions. As part of story time, Team AF have been reading the Smeds and Smoos by Julia Donaldson. The reason this text was chosen was because of its great links in supporting the differentiation in phonics knowledge because it provided good examples of nonsense words similar to that which may appear in the phonics screening check.
Team LL have spent the Spring Term exploring the genre of historic fiction through their class novel Secrets of a Sun King by Emma Carrol. In its narrative, the novel combines the story of a head strong girl and Howard Carter’s discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb. Through the novel and exploration of a wide range of texts, pupils have been developing further their VIPER skills but with a particular focus on inference, explanation and comparison. The class have developed their ability to give impressions and support the points made with evidence from the text. Pupils have also been developing responses which require comparison or contrast, ensuring enough detail is given to balance explanations.
What a lovely day it has been in and around school today! The children of Wombwell Park Street Primary School have absolutely loved participating in today's events. All children through school donned their best outfits to dress up in and celebrate a love of books. In addition to this, children right through school had been participating in lots of different events linked to the days celebrations. Children in Team CB were busy getting crafty and creating their own World Book Day bookmarks. In Team LG, children were found out in the Library being a library detective as they completed a scavenger hunt through books. In Team AF, children wrote about who they had dressed up as and why they chose their character. Meanwhile, in Team JF, some of the children were completing author studies of their acclaimed author David Walliams. Throughout the course of the day, children from all classes partnered up with another group to share stories, linking with this year's World Book Day theme of "Share a Million Stories". They also enjoyed time at the end of the day where different adults entered into classes to share their favourite story with another class.
During the Spring term, Team AC have been studying non-fiction texts about the Great Fire of London. The children have been able to find information and acquire new vocabulary linked to history. They have looked at how information and evidence can be found from reading diaries and newspaper articles from that time, as well as working to develop their explanation and summarising skills. The class have also looked at ‘Vlad and the Great Fire of London’ by Kate Cunningham. This is to compare how a narrative piece contrasts with a non-fiction. It is also from the point of view of the animals that lived at that time. It is an innovative resource which brings to life the reality of life in London in 1666 in a very engaging way.
With World Book Day on Thursday 5th March, this week is World Book Week at Park Street. We kick off the week with an exciting workshop for our Key Stage 2 children, combining how reading can influence creative writing. Then on Tuesday we have EYFS and Key Stage 1 reading with parents. By Thursday, we will all be in our best attire dressed as our favourite book characters to inspire our learning which will be based around books and all that they offer us. The following week, we will also be hosting our annual Scholastic Reading Fair. Check out the attached letter for more information.
