In Reading this half term Team DB have been working on the text the Amazing Evolution as their text driver. They have studied various extracts of the book, delving into the history of mankind. They have also studied various poetry texts as well as information texts related to the non-fiction text by Anna Claybourne. Over the half term, the class have developed a growing understanding of new vocabulary and have been learning how to use this in context within their writing. They have spent time building their fluency through the support of text marking. This is where they underline any words that are emphasised and add / to their text to show pauses. This allows the children to read the text fluently and ensures everyone reads it in the same way. Following work on fluency and vocabulary, Team DB have built upon their comprehension skills. The focus has been on retrieval and inference, deciding what the questions are asking of the reader and using the point and evidence technique, to build confidence as well as ability to answer comprehension style questions. The class' next steps will to be to make short summaries of extracts of text as well as making sensible predictions based on the facts that they already know.

They have explored selected extracts from the book alongside related texts to strengthen their understanding of this type of writing.
Throughout the term, the class have continued to expand their vocabulary and recognise how some words can have different meanings depending on the context. Their reading fluency has also improved, with more of the class reading at a faster pace and with greater attention to intonation, expression and pacing. As well as developing fluency, the children’s thinking skills have grown too. The class are now more confident in referring back to the text and using evidence to support their answers. They are also becoming increasingly independent when annotating texts, identifying key points to help justify their responses This half term in Reading, Team CB have focused on All the way down: Ocean as their central text. Staff are so proud of how hard the children have been working to read different character parts in different voices to show these are individual thoughts and words. Just as fluency has developed, so too has the class' critical thinking. The class are now more confident to refer back to the text and provide evidence for their answers and are growing in independence when annotating the text to find key points to support their answers.
In reading Team AC children have continued their learning in the Read Write Inc. programme, building on the strong foundations from the Autumn term. Most children now know all their set 1,2 and 3 sounds and have been using these to read and write words more confidently. The children have also been developing their blending skills to read green words and sentences with increasing fluency. They have been learning to recognise and read red words by sight. Through daily phonics sessions and Talk through stories, the children have continued to grow in confidence as readers and writers.
