Here is a quick update in relation to the amazing science work Y6 have been completing.
Enquiry Focus Problem Solving - Y6 became detectives CSI Wombwell. We carried out a hedgehog investigation. Using a range of evidence and sources we came up with a range of hypothesis about what could have happened to a rather unlucky hedgehog and we adapted our theories as new evidence came to light - which helped us solve the problem. Enquiry Focus: Observation Over Time - As part of our work on the heart and the circulatory system we are trying to take part in exercise every day and we then going to measure our resting pulse rate over the next few weeks to find out if our increased participation in exercise makes a difference to our resting heart rate (bpm). Watch this space we will keep you posted HUMANS CIRCULATORY SYSTEM AND HEALTH: We have been exploring what the circulatory system is. We have learnt that our blood is made up of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma. We know our blood is vital in transporting key gases and nutrients around the body and removing elements we do not need. We have studied closely the function of the heart - we know the main sections of the heart and can describe how the hear pumps blood to the lungs and then around the body, We know that blood travels in arteries, veins and capillaries. We have explored the importance of sleep, good nutrition and managing stress in order to maintain health and well being. We have planned a practical investigation to explore the impact of different levels of exercise on our heart rate. We will be practically carrying out the investigation in PE this week and will be recording our findings ready for analysis back in class.

Over the last couple of weeks we have been focusing on our grammar and spelling skills and knowledge to improve our written work. We have been learning about writing in the active and passive voice and considering the impact of the two in our own writing. We have been writing instructions in relation to the steps taken to mummify a body on ancient Egyptian times - yup it was pretty gruesome! During our reading sessions we have been focusing on prediction and summarising over the last couple of weeks.
In maths we have been revising area and perimeter and applying our knowledge to reasoning and problem solving. We have also been learning about volume and again engaging in a range of challenges and problems. Despite being super excited about our residential visit to Robinwood we have been working really hard in literacy and maths.
In our reading work we have been exploring non- fiction texts linked to our science topic of the heart and circulation and poetry. We have looked specifically at authorial intent linked to vocabulary choices. We have been writing our own non-fiction explanation texts in science explaining the processes linked to the circulatory system. In maths we have been working hard to learn fraction, decimal and percentage equivalents. In reading we have explored a range of fiction and non-fiction texts. We have been developing our understanding and strategies to answer reading comprehension questions with a focus on inference and explanation. In our writing we have been exploring the impact of sentence control, specifically the impact of short sentences and expanded sentences. We have also been working on elements of grammar including use of determiners, clauses and phrases.
In maths we have been working on percentages recognising them, understanding the concept and also applying our basic arithmetic skills to work out fractions of amounts. Over the last couple of weeks in maths we have been refining our knowledge of fractions. We have continued to work on fraction calculations and have been multiplying and dividing fractions. In addition, we we have been learning how to find fractions of amounts. We have applied our new knowledge to problem solving.
In writing we have been editing and presenting out setting descriptions. We worked hard to develop settings with a controlled atmosphere and have enjoyed sharing them with teachers and pupils in school. I reading we have started our new class novel Secrets of a Sun King by Emma Carroll. We have unpicked the characters of Lil, Oz and Tulip and explored features of historical narrative. Year 6 had the best time at Crucial Crew. We learnt about criminal responsibility, the youth justice system, road safety, hate crime, knife crime, antisocial behaviour, water safety to name but a few. Our Y6 team did us proud and listened and behaved brilliantly - they were praised by the members of the police force, ambulance service, fire service, magistrate and volunteers who worked with them on the day.
MATHS - We have been exploring addition and subtraction in up to 8 digit numbers. We have been exploring how numbers are composed. We have been using known facts and the skill of unitising to help us with our addition and subtraction strategies. We have also explored the use of part whole models, partitioning and the use of number lines to support with finding the difference. The class have enjoyed using braining camp to consolidate their understanding of place value and composition of numbers.
LITERACY - The children have explored sentence structure, complex expanded noun phrases and appropriate vocabulary choice, whilst developing their character descriptions. We worked together to develop character descriptions of Alex Rider using a variety of strategies to develop character including: description, action, interaction and dialogue. Pupils were then able to chose their own favourite character from a book they had read and develop their own descriptions. |
