It has been a busy couple of weeks in Team CB with all the class fully immersing themselves in their learning across the curriculum. Read below to find out what we have been up to:

Literacy:
In our Literacy, we concluded writing our own set of instructions. We applied all we had learned to be able to write instructions about how to make a fox goodie bag. The children loved doing this themselves practically in order to support with their recall when writing instructions. We have also moved on this week to a new unit of writing - looking at setting descriptions. After reading more of Fantastic Mr Fox we discussed how Bean and Boggis' storehouses were not described in detail like Bunce's so we are going to write our own. We have spent time looking at how descriptions are written well to help the reader and explored senses and expanded noun phrases as features which conjure up a clear image in the reader's mind. We will work to apply these features into writing over the coming weeks.

Maths:
In Maths we have progressed to our Place Value unit, where we have been busy exploring numbers within 100. We have looked at multiples of 10 which total 100, and complements to 100. We have applied the rule that our tens should make 9 tens/90 when combined and our ones should make 10 so that together it totals 100. This week, we have looked more closely at representing 3 digit multiples of 1o in different ways, knowing that 6 tens is the same as 60. We have also used our place value knowledge to write addition and subtraction problems. We concluded the week by using number facts to add and subtract multiples of 10 and bridge 100.

One Life:
This week in our One Life sessions we have continued looking at the theme of self-awareness being 'to know yourself to grow yourself'. We spent time reflecting on the book your mind is like the sky and discussed how we are the watcher of our thoughts. As humans we have recognised that not all thoughts are facts and that we have an inner cheerleader who champions us and an inner critic who can trick us into thinking negatively about ourselves. We drew visual representations of these to help us recognise that sometimes one is more dominant than another.

RE:
In our RE this week we explored Christianity. We looked specifically at the Church as a special place to Christians. After discussing our own special places, we explored features of a Church and why Christians would attend. We are hoping to visit the local church in the coming weeks to see if we can identify some of the features we have discussed this week.

It has been a wonderful week in Team CB! I am so very proud of the way that all children have taken to life in Year 3. The class as a whole have adjusted brilliantly to new challenges such as tables races, whole class reads and so on. Well done Team CB!

Literacy:
This week in our Literacy, we kick-started the week by celebrating our acclaimed author Roald Dahl. Across the day the class encountered different books he had written and various tasks. In our writing session, we continued our work on instructions to write our own version of George's Marvellous medicine. The children thought carefully about the ingredients and the verbs to explain how to carry out steps. In the remainder of our Literacy sessions, we spent time planning, drafting and editing our instructions for how to outsmart the farmers. The class worked incredibly hard to include adverbs in their writing to explain how, and where they were used at the beginning of sentences we punctuated these with commas.

Maths:
In our Maths this week we completed our work on addition and subtraction skills, before progressing to begin to look at place value with up to 3 digit numbers. We composed 100 in 10s and 1s before looking at how it is made up of 50s, 25s and 20s also. The class were quick to spot patterns to support with their recall of key facts.

Science:
In our Science this week we have been continuing to explore our new topic of plants. As a class, we discussed how we knew they were living organisms and began to look at differences in plants such as flowering and non-flowering plants. We sorted a range of plants based on this feature, using images to identify carefully. We also spent time handling plants and naming the key parts of them. Children could articulate that they had petals, leaves, stem and roots.

Computing:
In our Computing session this week we have been busy exploring Information Technology further. We have spent time reviewing what IT is and giving examples of this. We then considered a range of different IT and the purpose of it. We spent time thinking about whether it was effective in helping to do jobs, communicate with others or play games and sorted the IT appropriately. We quickly recognised that some types of IT do both!

Hello,

Welcome to Team CB’s blog for the academic year. It has been a wonderful start to the year so far and the children have settled brilliantly in to their new classroom, routines and learning.
We have spent time this week really solidifying expectations of the Key Stage 2 classroom and children have worked incredibly hard. Read on to find out what we have been up to:

Literacy:
In our Literacy we have worked hard to ensure we understand how to complete our daily dictated sentences as these will ensure we are regularly revising key spelling and grammar concepts. We have also engaged with our text driver for the half term Fantastic Mr Fox. We have delved into the text, discussing characters and their emotions as this will form the basis for our first piece of writing next week.

Maths:
In Maths, we have worked hard on our formation of digits and also understanding how to complete tables races. These are new to Key Stage 2 and children will spend the first 3 weeks of the year doing these daily to strengthen their recall of times tables facts. So far the class have worked incredibly hard and have already made progress against them. Next week, we will look to recap addition and subtraction strategies when bridging 10.

History:

In our History this week we have completed our pre-unit assessment drawing on what we already know linked to the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. This was useful as it allowed children to see what they already know as well as explore questions they want to discover the answers to over the course of the topic.

Music:
In Music this week we started to explore dynamics and tempo and began to engage with the song Sparkle in the Sun. We considered if the song told a story, how old the music was and whether we liked it or not. After having discussed this, we then began to learn how to sing the song. We initially learned verses before learning the rest of the song. Once we felt confident with this, we then practised playing our instrument the glockenspiel to accompany our piece, focussing on the use of the G key. Finally, we performed our piece altogether drawing on what we had learned over the course of the session.

Check back soon for further updates.
