Today, the children used base-ten equipment to explore subtraction by bridging through 10. We introduced the key vocabulary minuend, subtrahend and difference and developed their understanding of how these numbers work together.
The children discovered that when the subtrahend is the same as the 1s digit of the minuend, the difference is 10. They then built on this understanding to apply the strategy to subtraction calculations that went beyond 10, using the base-ten equipment to make their thinking visible. The children have been working incredibly hard in their RWI groups this week! They have been developing their ability to retain and apply sounds, learning new sounds and building their speed, accuracy and fluency when reading.
Some children are also taking part in reading groups focused on developing their comprehension and understanding of what they read. The children work in different groups to make sure they are getting the support and challenge they need, and it has been fantastic to see everyone working hard and making progress with their reading. This week in RE, we explored the Bible story of the healing of the paralysed man. We discussed whether we believed the events really happened and investigated the different accounts of the story in Matthew and Mark, considering how the events were described.
The children sequenced the story and thought carefully about the importance of respecting others. We finished by discussing the messages the story might teach us, including helping others, never giving up and always having hope. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zyhv87h/watch/zjn634j This week in Computing, we explored how information technology (IT) is used beyond school. The children identified different examples of technology in places such as shops, offices and public spaces, and sorted different devices according to where they might be found.
We also discussed what different technologies are used for, including barcode scanners, tills, card readers and traffic lights. The children enjoyed sharing their ideas and discovering just how much IT is part of our everyday lives! |
