Caterpillars and Butterflies

We have begun our new theme for learning today by sharing the book of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle. We read the book together and used it to talk about the life cycle of the butterfly. We have also sung a song together which helps us to remember the life cycle. After this, we looked at pictures of different butterflies and noticed that the wings were patterned and colourful. We also spotted that their patterns were the same on both wings. We learnt the word symmetrical and have added it to a wow word tree along with the word beautiful which came from our story. We will be trying to use these wow words as we are talking this week! 
Our provision activities so far have been:
-making and decorating butterflies in the play dough by adding sequins and matchsticks.
-drawing patterns on butterflies wings and trying to make them symmetrical- we have done an AMAZING job of this!
-decorating butterflies using collage materials
-using tweezers to pick up different shaped pasta and sorting it to represent the butterfly life cycle. 
-working together to complete some tricky jigsaws about the butterfly life cycle. 
-exploring our minibeast garden small world area.
-sharing lots of story and information books about minibeasts.
