Coronation Learning- Understanding the World

Today we begun to learn about the Coronation of King Charles III in preparation for our celebrations tomorrow. We began by looking at a photograph of King Charles and discussed who he is- learning to say his name and the Makaton sign for King. Then we talked about what happens at a coronation and we looked at a photograph of the crown. After that we looked at a photograph of Queen Elizabeth at her coronation and we noticed that it was in black and white. The children were amazed at the difference! We used the words "long ago" and "past" to support our understanding of early History. Then Miss McGinnes showed us a black and white photograph of her Mum at a street party in 1953. She was three years old and wore red, white and blue to celebrate but we couldn't tell as it was a black and white photograph. We were surprised to find out that lots of people didn't have a television in those days and Miss McGinnes' Mum didn't have one. However, Miss McGinnes' Dad's family bought a television just so they could watch the coronation. We looked at a picture of what his television would have looked like and we thought it was very different and looked funny. Here are some photos of us engaged in our discussions- the children were very interested and asked lots of questions! 
At snack time, we watched part of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth from 1953. Again, the children were very interested and amazed that it was in black and white.

During the session, we did some painting using red, white and blue, had a role play coronation tea party in our home corner and we all coloured in a flag to create our own class bunting. The bunting will be on display tomorrow for our special celebration day.
