NSPCC Numbers Day

Lots of number fun was had in nursery today and there was so much talk about numbers and counting. The children were all invited to wear a number or numbers and some had made their own number outfit! 

We had number songs playing as the children entered nursery and we counted the children as we did the register. Each child was given a cube and we built a tower to represent the children who were three years old and then the children who were four years old. We compared the towers and talked about which was the most and which was less or fewer. After this, we went on a coin hunt around nursery. We had hidden 1p and 2p coins all over for the children to find and sort into 1p or 2p bowls. We found out that the 1p coin was smaller and the 2p coin was bigger in size and we also learnt to look for the number on the coin. Once we had found and sorted them all, we returned to the carpet to count how many of each we had found. We learnt that it is easier to count them if they are lined up and we pointed to each coin carefully as we said the numbers. Finally, we worked together to make a coin tower and find out which was the tallest! 

When the children were busy in the provision, we had lots of number opportunities too! We enjoyed playing a number fishing game and a number hook a duck game. We also hunted for numbered pebbles in the sand and caught numbered ducks in the water tray. In the dough, we had a challenge to make the right number of candles for the birthday cakes. We also had a go at writing numbers in our mark making area. 
Finally, we finished the day by watching Numberjacks together. What a busy day with so much Maths learning!
