This week we are learning about creatures that live under the sea. We began today by reading the book "Commotion in the Ocean" which introduced us to lots of different sea creatures. Our provision activities this week include: a tray with blue cornflour gloop and sea creatures to explore, clams in the water tray, an under the sea small world area, a numbered magnetic fishing game to play together, creating sea creatures using different collage and mark making materials and making sea creatures in the dough. We have also enhanced our classroom with lots of fiction and non-fiction books about sea creatures.

After singing the song "Walking Through the Jungle" we set off on our welly walk to the nature reserve which had been turned into the jungle! There were lots of jungle animals hiding in the trees for us to spot! We went exploring in teams with a clipboard and an animal spotter sheet. The children worked as a team to spot the different animals and then mark them off on their sheet- a purposeful mark making opportunity. Once all the animals had been found, the children donned their animal masks and became the animals themselves! Everyone had so much fun while learning together.
The children really developed their concentration skills as they decorated a bun to look like a monkey today. First, they melted chocolate and carefully spread in on the top of their bun. Then they used different sweets to make it look like a monkey from our book of the week- Dear Zoo. Finally the buns were left to set in time for home time. I hope you enjoyed eating your creation!
Today the children in nursery were very excited to come to nursery wearing their favourite book character costumes. We paraded around nursery in small groups and the children guessed who everyone was dressed as. The nursery adults were dressed as wild animals from our Dear Zoo book of the week. During the session we enjoyed lots of stories, including "Giraffe's Can't Dance" read by Miss McGinnes dressed as a giraffe,
Our Maths song of the week is "Five Little Monkeys Swinging in the Trees" to link in with our wild animals theme. At group time we have sung and acted out the song with children to represent the monkeys. The children were encouraged to show the amount of monkeys on their fingers and take one away each time the crocodile snaps until there are none left. We used the words take away and less to help us.
We have set up our Maths table with the song resources so the children can apply this learning independently in their play. |
