This week we are continuing our colour theme by focusing on the story of Elmer by David McKee. We have read different versions of the story and have talked about being different and how that is okay.
In the painting area, we have been learning how to mix different colours together to make new ones. We have also decorated our own colourful elephants by sticking coloured squares on and also by mark making different patterns. Our song of the week is "One elephant went out to play." We have been showing the amount of elephants on our fingers and then adding on one more to the spiders web as the song develops. We have practised counting by putting small coloured elephants onto a spiders web outline, Some of us have been learning to say the numbers in order when we count, some have been counting the elephants, learning to point carefully at each one and some of us have been recognising numbers and counting out the right number of elephants to match from a larger group. We have some budding Mathematicians in our nursery!

Today we had great fun in nursery creating our own firework dance using ribbons. We practised different moves with our ribbons including circles. zig zags, swirls and spinning. Then we put on some music and a firework show background and the children created their own dance moves using the ribbons. The children loved exploring the different moves they could make and this is a fantastic activity for developing their gross motor skills. When we finished, we sat down and realised that our hearts were beating faster and we were feeling hot and sweaty. We talked about healthy exercise and then we all had a drink of water to re-hydrate ourselves. What a great learning opportunity!
Here are some photos of us in action: We have had great fun creating fireworks on a large scale using paint filled spray bottles. The children had to press the trigger to release the paint which was really good for developing their fine motor skills. Look at us enjoying ourselves while learning!
For our food activity today we have made edible sparklers from breadsticks dipped in chocolate. We learnt how to melt the chocolate to make it runny so we could dip our breadsticks in it and we found out that the chocolate went hard again by hometime. Carefully sprinkling the various sprinkles onto the chocolate was great for developing the children's fine motor skills and concentration.
I hope they tasted as good as they looked! Welcome back to a new term in nursery. We are looking forward to seeing what amazing progress the children can make!
This week we are theming our learning around Bonfire Night. Today we have watched and listened to a clip of some fireworks and talked about the different sounds and colours. We pretended to be fireworks and blasted off into the sky making the shapes with our bodies and re-creating the different sounds. We have also been very creative! We have developed our fine motor skills while painting fireworks using cotton buds and chalking fireworks on black paper. We have also used glitter and a wide range of collage materials to create fireworks. Here are a few photos of us getting creative! |
