We have started our new topic this summer term, focusing on habitats, with a particular emphasis on the Amazon Rainforest in Team DB. To begin, we completed a detailed research sheet exploring what habitats are, the different types that exist around the world, and the unique features that make each one suitable for specific plants and animals.
As part of this process, we also discussed the importance of research before starting any piece of artwork. By learning about our chosen habitat and animal in advance, we can make more informed decisions about shapes, colours, textures, and materials. This helps ensure that our artwork is not only creative but also accurate and meaningful, reflecting the real characteristics of the animal and its environment. After our general habitat research, each of us selected a specific Amazon Rainforest animal to focus on for our collage project. We spent time learning about our chosen animal—such as its appearance, patterns, and the environment it lives in—so that we could represent it more effectively in our work. This week, we began sketching the outline of our animal, carefully observing its shape and proportions. We also explored and discussed the types of materials and colours we might use in our collages, thinking about how to recreate textures like fur, feathers, or scales, and how to match the vibrant colours of the rainforest. This thoughtful planning will support us as we move on to creating our final collage pieces. We have been collecting wall paper and other materials ready to get going with our final collage piece. We cant wait to show you!

In Year 5, learning another language is important because it helps us understand different cultures, improves our communication skills, and supports our overall learning. As part of our lesson, we learnt about different types of habitats in Spanish. We listened carefully to key words and then matched them to the correct photos, helping us connect what we heard with their meanings. This activity helped us build our vocabulary and improve our listening skills in a fun and engaging way.
During maths this week, we have focused on understanding the area of 2D shapes by exploring how much space a flat surface covers, using items from around the classroom to support our learning. We also learnt how squares tessellate—fitting together without gaps or overlaps—and why this is important when calculating the area of a shape accurately.
During computing, we had lots of fun using the laptops to explore a photo editing app. We learned how to adapt and change our photos using different techniques such as colouring, shading, and cropping. This was an important skills for Year 5, as it helped us develop our creativity, improve our digital skills, and understand how technology can be used to present and enhance images effectively.
Look how amazing our finished Greek vases are! We’ve added the final geometric patterns to complete the look, and we think they look really authentic—what do you think? We’ve honestly loved every part of designing and creating them!
During our Incredible US on Friday we decorated biscuits,
There’s just something magical about a classroom that’s buzzing with laughter and high-fives. We had such a fab afternoon on Friday focusing on team building and just connecting with each other. It was really relaxed and fun—everyone got stuck into decorating biscuits, which definitely brought out some hidden creative (and competitive!) sides. We also did a code breaker challenge for prizes, which got us chatting, laughing, and working together in a really natural way. It was a great reminder of how important it is to take time out like this, build relationships, and just enjoy each other’s company outside of our usual routine.. We had a fantastic time in literacy exploring our creative writing! Some of our wonderful parents joined us to see just how imaginative we can be. Mrs Bamforth began our story with a mysterious magic key that opened the door to a whole new world. From there, we let our imaginations run wild—creating candy lands, journeys through space, football worlds, and so much more!
We absolutely loved bringing our ideas to life, and we hope our parents enjoyed sharing the experience with us just as much as we did! We had a very fun science experiment this week. We got to make our own parachutes using plastic bags, string and toy cars.
In our science experiment, we investigated how the surface area of a parachute’s canopy influences its descent by testing various "wing spans" against the constant force of gravity. We discovered that as we increased the size of the parachute, the air resistance (drag) acting upward also increased, effectively counteracting the gravitational pull that accelerates the object toward the ground. By measuring the time it took for each parachute to land, we observed that larger canopies created significantly more friction with the air, resulting in a much slower and more controlled terminal velocity compared to the smaller models. We really enjoyed creating them ourselves and seeing that they worked, helping us decide if our predicitons were correct. We are well underway for our Greek Vases and pottery being completed. We have painted them this week ready for our geometric designs painted on next week. We can't wait to show you the finished designs before Easter!
allDuring the week, we designed and created Mother's Days cards with lovely inserts. On Friday during Incredible Us Time, we created beautiful Mother's Day baskets from coloured paper and Mrs Bamforth was really kind to buy us sweets to go in the baskets for all our lovely mothers and Carers in our class!
Thank you for all doing an amazing job. |
