King Charles III Coronation and this weeks learning

IOur learning this week has focused on King Charles 111 Coronation. We started the week listening to the lovely story “Winnie the Pooh Meets the King” by Jane Riordan. We have learnt that a coronation is a special ceremony where a new king or queen is crowned and the new king or queen makes a promise to look after their country. We know that the King will travel to Westminster Abbey in the Gold State Coach.
In provision, we have been using the peg boards to make the Union Jack flag and the English flag. We have had pictures of past carriages and crowns displayed to generate discussions about the past. Children have had the opportunity to make a collage of King Charles using tissue paper and to make their own bunting. Children have been looking at how the coronation will be celebrated across the country. Some boys have been producing wonderful drawing and sentences about Buckingham Palace and the Busby Guards!

In Literacy, Year 1’s have been focusing on adding the suffix ‘es’ to words that end in ch, sh, s, x, or z to make it plural. Reception children continue to access RWI sessions daily and have recently begun handwriting to practise letter formation - ensuring they are starting and finishing in the correct place.

​In Maths, Reception have been ordering towers of cubes from 1–10 on a class number track, used language to describe positions on a number track, identified whether numbers are before or after 5 on the number track and played a simple, linear track game. Year 1’s have explored what happens when a number is subtracted from itself, doubled numbers and explained what doubling means and halved numbers and explained what halving means.

In Science, we have learned to know the names of the following common plants - daisy, nettle, white clover, poppy, ivy, bramble, dandelion and grass.

In Computing, Year 1's first activity was to open up the document that we saved in last weeks lesson. Then we thought about what we need at the start of sentences and we learnt what the capital lock key looks like and identified it on our keyboard template. We then went back to our document from last we and added capital letters into our writing where they needed to. We were then given a handout “What do these keys do?” and had to cut out the description boxes and stick them at the end of the line pointing to the correct key. We learnt what a toolbar is and then we explored what each of the three tools did by pressing a button and writing “Ted” again. We finished by saving our work.

​In PE, we had lots of fun! Our warm up game this week was called “Frogs and Flies” – 3 children frogs and they had to tag the other children who were flies. We then practised our throwing and catching skills with a partner using the underarm throw before moving onto using the overarm pull technique to see how far we could throw our beanbag. Our final activity of the main session was long jump practice! We practiced 3 different jumps – 2 footed with arms above head, 2 footed with arms by the side and 2 footed swinging arms. Finally, to cool down we played a game of “pick the apples” we had to skip whilst reaching up high to get the apples from the trees and walk slowly reaching down to get the apples off the floor.
