The whole Y3 cohort came together to take part in developing their knowledge of the when, where and why the first flight (of the Wright brothers) took place, Before coming together, the children entered the classroom to music and images of the screen on board an aeroplane. None of the children knew what was happening and so naturally, they all began to pull up a chair to watch the screen to find out more. From there, they were then handed their airline ticket before lining up to go through to the correct gate. When entering the hall, the children chose their seats (without advance booking!) to listen carefully to the onboard the aircraft safety flight video. At the end, the children had to explore in their talk partners, what they thought might be happening and why. To kick start the day, Mr Blanchard very kindly came in to talk to the children about his role within the RAF through the use of images and clips. The children could gain an insight into the types of aircraft that are used within the RAF. Not only that, Mr Blanchard spoke about the first flight and the journey to how flight has evolved over time and the impact it has had on our lives, It was so lovely to hear the children as so many fascinating questions about the types of aircraft and why they had changed over time. Throughout the day, the children had the opportunity to move around the four different rooms to develop their understanding and knowledge about the history of flight and how the Wright brothers changed the world and made it feel a much smaller place to be. Towards the end of the day, the children had another special visitor, who occupation has been in designing and making parts for aeroplanes as well as designing and making his own planes. Mr Whittaker, even brought in his current model to talk about. At the end, the children had the amazing opportunity to experience what it would be like to be a pilot by sitting in his own flight model. This was a very special moment for a lot of the children.
