This half term, Team JF has been on a brilliant learning journey through our Incredible Me! Our focus has been all about developing strong teamwork skills, and the children have truly risen to the challenge.
Throughout the weeks, we’ve explored what it means to work together by playing a wide range of team games. These activities gave us the perfect opportunities to practise sharing and taking turns, as well as to experience both winning and losing with confidence and kindness. One of the biggest parts of our learning has been recognising and managing the big emotions that come with competitive play. Whether celebrating a win or coping with disappointment, the children have shown incredible maturity and resilience. We are so proud of how each child has grown. They have demonstrated what fantastic team players they are—supportive, patient, determined, and always willing to give things a go. Team JF has truly embodied the spirit of Incredible Me! this half term.

Maths
This week, the children of Team JF started exploring subtraction. To begin with, we looked at the minus symbol and mind mapped as many different words to represent it as we could and what we already knew about it. From this, we used tens frame to represent numbers and started to discuss what happens to numbers when we subtract. As we practised our skills, we started to recognise patterns within our calculations and our number bonds to 10. Finally, we worked with our partner to use two tens frames to start with a whole of twenty. As the week progressed, we began to think about how to solve trickier calculations quickly. We used our knowledge of partitioning to help us do this. The children used Base 10 to make their numbers and place them in the correct columns on the place value chart. After that, we started taking away from our whole number. Finally, we were able to identify what we had left. Literacy This week, Team JF started a new unit of learning based on the text driver ‘The Lost Happy Endings’. This was shared with the class as part of an exciting hook to write our very own diary entries! After sharing the text, our text, audience and purpose for writing was established. Children were clear that the focus for this unit of writing would be to write a diary entry from different perspectives to share with each other. During this lesson, the focus of learning was centred around one of the main characters ‘Jub’ to gain a better understanding of her thoughts/feelings throughout the story. As the week progressed, Team JF had to think about the characters in the story the Lost Happy Endings. The children focused on the witch’s thoughts and feelings. They learnt what ‘hot seating’ was and how it was important to get into character. The children worked hard in pairs to practice hot seating, as the witch. Team JF really enjoyed asking and answering questions as a group. Literacy
This half term, Team JF have truly shone in their writing journey, inspired by our class text driver The Tin Forest. Their creativity, imagination, and growing technical skills have been a joy to see! We began by making our very own tin birds. Not only did the children enjoy crafting these unique creations, but they also wrote clear and thoughtful instructions to teach Team CH how to make their own. What fantastic teachers they became! Next, the children turned their attention to descriptive writing. Using rich expanded noun phrases, they brought to life the two contrasting forests from The Tin Forest — one dull and lifeless, the other bursting with colour and growth. Their words painted pictures so vivid, you could almost step right into the page. Alongside their creative work, Team JF have worked hard to strengthen their grammar skills. They practised adding the suffixes es, ed, and ing to a variety of root words, building confidence in spelling and sentence construction. This half term, Team JF have been working incredibly hard to develop their writing skills through engaging and imaginative activities. Our journey began with a focus on our “Acclaimed Author” Oliver Jeffers. Using The Day the Crayons Quit as our text driver, we explored the personalities of different coloured crayons and created vibrant shape poems inspired by our favourites. The children carefully selected adjectives to describe their chosen colours and concentrated on key writing fundamentals such as letter formation, finger spaces, and keeping their writing neatly on the line.
Later in the term, we delved into Gorilla by Anthony Browne. This powerful story inspired the class to write detailed character descriptions of the gorilla, with a particular focus on using expanded noun phrases. We also explored how to incorporate the five senses to build a rich and vivid profile of the character’s appearance and behaviour. Team JF have shown fantastic progress and creativity in their writing, and we’re so proud of their efforts! Maths
This half term Team JF have been working incredibly hard to add and subtract numbers in a variety of ways. We started off looking a two single digit numbers to spot the patterns such as number bonds and doubles. From this, we were able to apply our knowledge of the number system to add two digit numbers. For example, if I know 4+3=7 then I know 24+3=27. The children have loved identifying the patterns within these and realised the decade doesn't change, only the ones! PE This half term Team JF have been busy inside and outside! During indoor PE, we have been working on our gymnastics skills, creating a range of shapes with our bodies and practicing our jumping and landing skills. Outdoor, we have been focusing on evading and tagging opponents, keeping control of the ball, passing the ball accurately and receiving safely on the move. In Team JF’s music, we listened to and discussed the song "Music is in My Soul." We focused on identifying the rhythm and beat, and carefully considered the different instruments we could hear throughout the track. These observations helped us begin learning the song, starting with the chorus and then moving into the first verse. It was a great opportunity to combine listening skills with performance and deepen our understanding of musical structure.
PE
So far this year in PE, Year 2 have been developing their gymnastics skills during indoor sessions in the hall, focusing on key shapes such as pikes, tucks, and rolls. They’ve practiced balancing, transitioning between movements, and working collaboratively to build up to performing a paired gymnastics routine. Outdoors, the children have been working on football skills, concentrating on ball control and passing techniques. Through fun and engaging activities, they’ve learned how to move with the ball, improve accuracy, and play cooperatively in small-sided games. RE Team JF have made a great start to our RE learning this term. Our Autumn focus is Christianity. As a class, we began by completing our pre unit assessment to identify what we already knew. In addition to this, we found it a great opportunity to ask lots of questions about our chosen faith. This week we moved into sharing some special stories from the Bible. Initially, we spoke of how the Bible was a holy book and how each story had a special meaning. We listened to and discussed; ‘The Baby in the Temple’ and ‘King Herod’ from The New Testament. Art This half term, Team JF have been bursting with creativity and enthusiasm! Our learning journey began with a focus on our artist of the term, Hans Holbein. Inspired by his distinctive style, we explored portrait sketching—paying close attention to detail, pencil technique, and shading. We then connected our artistic skills with geography by studying iconic UK landmarks. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sketching these landmarks and bringing them to life by crafting our own models using recycled materials. Computing This half term in Computing we have been learning about computer systems and networks. We began by exploring how digital devices work and discovered that they all have inputs, processes and outputs. We then looked in more detail at the different parts that make up a digital device. From this, we explored how we use a range of technology for different purposes. Finally, we became our very own network systems and shared messages between ourselves in the same way a computer system would! Geography
Team JF have made a great start to learning. So far, we have completed our pre unit assessment to identify what we already know, where this links with other learning and what we would like to explore further. In addition to this, we have used the globes and atlases to locate the United Kingdom. We had great a great discussion about our continent and started to explore the four countries within the United Kingdom. Finally we labelled our very own maps to gain a better understanding of where we are in the world. Science Team JF have started to explore our first unit of learning, materials. We have completed our pre unit assessment and realised that we have remember lots about this area. We knew lots of words linked to this and could even make links with our artwork! We cant wait to get started this week! Welcome back Team JF!
Last week, the new Team JF settled into Year 2 brilliantly! We got up to lots of things including maths, literacy, spellings, science, geography and more! Maths Last week, we started exploring counting. The children worked really hard to count forwards and backwards within 100. We also focused on our number formation. Literacy Last week, we started exploring our class author 'Oliver Jeffers'. We started by discussing the word author, what it meant and any authors we liked. From this, we looked at some familiar Oliver Jeffers books and began reading them together. We found these very enjoyable and funny too! This week, we will begin exploring our author further to write our own fact files about him |
