Science- This week our learning in science has been about hibernating and migrating animals and how they prepare for the winter and the changes in the weather and season. We have listened to the story Don’t Hog the Hedge and information about UK hibernating animals as well as migrating birds.
Following from this the children have written information and make a hibernating animal home opening picture.

Literacy,-we continue to work on our perfect pencil grip and forming letters correctly. This weeks letters have been m,r,e and s. We are also using our Fred Fingers to spell CVC words, practising writing tricky red words and are practising writing simple sentences through ‘hold a sentence’. Our talk through story this week has been Coming to England which is a true story from the life of Floella Benjamin.

Maths -  we have; counted to and back from 20, counted on and counted anything, counted backwards from any number between 0 and 20 and we have counted forwards and backwards from any number between 0 and 20.  In Mastering Number, we have focused on comparison using the language ‘more than’, ‘fewer than’ and ‘equal to’.

One Life-  we read the book ‘Love is a family’ – we spoke about our families. We know that what makes a family is love, care and protection.

PE,- we have developed our control and accuracy when rolling a ball. and in Dance we have danced to the theme of the colour white, floating and drifting like steam, clouds and smoothly like elegant swans.

PE- We have practised  balancing and moving in different ways and following commands. We balanced bean bags on different parts of our body whilst moving. We have also negotiated space using different obstacle stations.  In dance we have been using the stimulus of colour. This week the colour was blue. We moved in different ways to warm up and then played copycats with a partner mirroring their movements. We listened to the music Orinoco flow and thought of moves that we could do that represented water. We then practised our moves to the music with our partner.

One life- we have been learning about our inner critic and how it is important to know that thoughts are not facts and that there are always things that we will find hard but listening to our inner cheerleader can help us to cheer ourselves on and have a I can't do this yet attitude instead of a I can't do this, so I won't try attitude..

Music- we have been exploring pulse and beat. We have used xylophones to copy a beat and used our bodies to respond to a beat and the song Head Shoulders, Knees and Toes with actions.

Science- We have been learning about the different seasons. Naming them as well as the months of the year. We have talked about seasonal changes in Autumn and Winter such as the days getting shorter and nights longer as well as changes to the weather.

Geography- We have kept a daily weather forecast and used weather symbols. We have talked about how the weather changes with the seasons and how our clothes change with the weather.

Art- We have made weather symbols from our drawings and used different collage techniques.

Computers-  We have logged onto the laptops  and used the mouse to play a simple game.

Maths- we have been practising the use of ordinals, counting to 100, counting 1 more and 1 less than numbers to 10 and identifying missing numbers in a sequence.

Literacy- we have shared the story The cave and practised holding and writing a sentence based on the actions of the wolf in the story. We have practised adding the suffix -ing onto words. We have also been continuing with our daily handwriting practise.

Maths- we have been counting amounts, checking them with our partner. Looking at how numbers and amounts can be represented in different ways.

Literacy- we have shared the story of What makes me a me. We have added 's' to words to make them a plural such as leg, head, arm.
We have built sentences about the main story character using the stem sentence He has a... and then sentences about ourselves I have a..

P.E- We have  danced as red and created moves to Disco inferno as fire. In games we have used the courts for the first time and explored moving in different ways and balance.

Science- We have matched photos so that they represent the correct seasons and ordered the seasons correctly

Geography-We have learnt that the United Kingdom is made up of four countries. We have been practising naming these countries and locating them on a map.

One life- we have been thinking about ourselves positively and drawing our inner cheerleaders to spur us on when we find things tricky.

AWe have had a great first week settling into our new class as Year 1s.

We have begun our topic learning about Weather around the world and seasons and change. by discussing what we already know about the weather and seasons and what we would like to find out.

Some members of the class were keen to find out about storms. Know how rain is made and to find out about the weather in the jungle.

In Maths we have been practising counting to 100 and recapping our counting skills such as tagging when counting.

In Literacy we shared the story Pete the Cat and Rocking in my school shoes. This was a nice story to start the school year as we talked about what  activities we would be doing in our school shoes.
We also listened to other Pete the Cat stories and enjoyed singing along with the chorus.

Next week we will be writing about the story. practising  building a sentence, holding it in our head and writing it with a fullstop at the end.

In Spanish we learnt greetings and in ICT we identified technology that we use at school and home.

All in all, a great start to the new school year by the Rockets.
