Since Christmas we listened to Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Private Peaceful’ which sparked the interest of the children to learn more about the life of child soldiers. To link with our PE curriculum, we ran a young soldiers training camp on the afternoon of the 27th February. This took place in the school’s nature reserve and was led by Mr Fidment. The children learnt to respond to a variety of commands, march as a rank, polish boots and much much more.
Throughout the morning the children discovered the lives and stories of local people involved in WW1 using archival documents, handling objects and period costume. The children had a hands on experience with artefacts and crafts, including making a Princess Mary tin. The session ended with a reflective creative writing activity where pupils transported themselves back in time to write a postcard from the perspective of a soldier or nurse. To ensure we made the most of the morning and the children could fully engaged in the experience, we invited all the children in Team LG to come to school for the day dressed up ready for war. It was fantastic to see the effort the children had gone to in order to fit with the time and theme of our day.
