Maths - we have been working on algebra. We have been forming algebraic expressions and using a range of formula to solve problems. We have also been revising metric units of measurement and conversion.
Literacy - We have continued to develop our reading skills exploring a range of fiction and non-fiction texts. We have explored authorial intent and use of vocabulary. Year 6 were lucky enough to have a fab time working with Conrad Burdekin (published author and friend of the school). We created our own Y6 performance poem.

This term we have completed out unit on El Colegio where we explored timetables, times, subjects and the sentence stems to support conversation. We went back and recapped the Y4 unit on school objects and equipment. More recently we have moved on to 'The Weekend' where we are building on our knowledge to discuss pass times and things that we do in our leisure time.
This term we have been developing our gymnastic skills further and have been carrying out a range of activities, games and challenges to develop further our teamwork and leadership skills. We enjoyed our trip to Robinwood where we developed further out outdoor and adventurous knowledge, skills and experience- checkout the Robinwood posts for pictures of our adventures.
We have been exploring variables in games and are about to develop further our data skills by introducing and developing our understanding of spreadsheets.
Children have engaged this term in our weekly listening and appraising sessions as well as our weekly sing. We have explored a variety of musical genres including classical, folk, reggae and pop. We have learnt a range of modern and traditional songs and developed our two part and group choral performances. During our class music sessions Y6 have developed further their understanding of notation and have developed their own compositions with simple musical scores.
We have developed further out sketching skills by exploring the use of the pyramid form - including establishing light source, hatching and shading. We have incorporated our work in to some of our work connected to ancient Egypt. We have learnt about the importance of art in ancient Egyptian time including the use and symbolism of colour ad objects. We have explored the way Egyptian art is portraited in profile. We have used a range of media to develop Egyptian inspired drawings, modroc to develop our interpretation of canopic jars and we will soon be using plaster of Paris and moulds to develop a range of small scale Egyptian inspired models.
We have been exploring structures and specifically playgrounds. Y6 have had the task to research different playgrounds collect ideas and generate a plan for their own playground. The are building prototypes and will ultimately choose three items from their plan to make. We will then team up with our peers to present and evaluate our designs.
In RE we have been learning about what it means to be a Buddhist. We have explored the life of the Buddha, key festivals and the importance of the Tripitaka. We have also explored the noble truths and eight fold path. We have built on our learning about the Christian faith from the autumn term. We have used our knowledge of Christianity as a frame of reference to compare and contrast with Buddhism.
ONELIFE - We have developed our understanding of compassion. We have looked particularly at the importance of showing compassion to ourselves. We have looked at ways we can encourage our inner cheer leaders and silence those pesky inner critics. We have explored different ways to develop our emotional fitness in order to turn up as our best selves. Year 6 are rapidly becoming experts on all things Ancient Egyptian.
We have enjoyed learning about - The chronology of events - Geography and applying our map skills to locate the are covered by ancient Egypt - Structure of Egyptian society - Importance of artifacts and becoming detectives to try and deduce information form a range of sources - We have learnt about the important work of Joann Fletcher, Ernest Jones and Howard Carter - We have explored Egyptian beliefs including the afterlife, book of the dead, mummification and embalming and the various gods worshipped. We have also considered the legacy of the ancient Egyptians |
