This half term, Team JF have been diving into the magical world of The Lost Happy Endings as the inspiration for their writing. Using this rich and imaginative text, they explored how to write diary entries from the perspective of different characters.
To help them step into each character’s shoes, they used drama to bring scenes to life. Acting out key moments allowed children to infer thoughts, feelings, and motivations, which then fed beautifully into their writing. The children showed real empathy and creativity as they considered how each character might react to the events in the story. Alongside this, the class focused on developing their sentence skills. They practised using a range of sentence types—questions, statements, and commands—to add variety and impact to their diary entries. This helped the class think carefully about how a character might express themselves and how to make their writing more engaging for the reader. It’s been wonderful to see the children grow in confidence as writers, storytellers, and performers.

Throughout the Spring term, Reception children have been practising writing CVC words and have begun writing ‘hold a sentence’ in their daily RWI lessons. Within continuous provision, children have been given regular opportunities to apply their writing skills. In Spring 1, children were encouraged to label their drawings using the phonic skills they have acquired so far. Pupils have also taken part in a range of ‘funky finger’ activities to develop fine motor control and strengthen hand muscles to support writing development.
