In Literacy, Year 1 children started our new unit of writing based on the text driver “Mr Wolf’s Week” by Colin Hawkins. Our text that we are working on is a diary which we are going to share with our peers to inform them what we have done on each day of the week! This week we have been practising spelling the days of the week correctly and using the conjunction ‘and’. On Thursday we started our diary entries and we were able to independently use the suffix ‘ed’. Reception children have been accessing fine motor groups to strengthen finger muscles and to practise letter formation. Here we are working hard to practise the formation of 'o'. In Maths, Reception children have learnt to identify a cube, sphere, cylinder and cone and identified whether these shapes stack or roll. We have recapped that there are 5 fingers on 1 hand and consolidated our use of finger patterns to represent the composition of 5. We have used pictorial representations and finger patterns to identify a missing part of 5. Our Year 1 children have represented ‘first, then, now’ stories with addition equations – we have done this using pictorial and abstract representations. In History, we have explained about how we know about the Great Fire of London. We discussed the different sources of information and know that cameras were not invented in 1666. We identified sources which are most and least helpful such as dairy entries and paintings or coins.
In Science, we have learnt that the season we are in is Spring. We looked at photos and know that in Spring the weather gets warmer and the days get longer. We know that some animals are born in Spring and that things start to grow – we discussed which signs of Spring we may see in our outdoor area and which we wouldn’t! On Friday, we took part in lots of different fundraising events to raise money for Comic Relief. We know that some children around the UK and the world aren’t as lucky as we are and that we are raising money to give to them to improve their lives. We raised money by wearing it ‘red-to-toe’, having a bun sale and a sponge throw at Mr Davison! In class we have completed word-searches, had colouring pictures and made faces with red noses!
