School Aims, Targets and
School Improvement Plan Priorities 2024-25

"Senior leaders know their school very well and their evaluations are precise and accurate. They draw on their in-depth knowledge to generate tightly-focused action plans to rapidly drive identified areas forward.'
(Ofsted 2014)

'You and your team understand the school well. You know your strengths and are honest about what you have to do to further improve the school. You have shown strong capacity for making improvements where necessary. For example, before the inspection, I was keen to understand what you do to ensure the strong attendance of different groups of pupils. There has been some fluctuation in pupils'
attendance since the last inspection and at times a very high proportion of pupils have been persistently absent.  However, you have worked effectively to improve these areas and pupils’ attendance is higher than average. In addition, the proportion of pupils who are persistently absent is well below average and this has further reduced this year. These important improvements have come about through your work to engage families and ensure that they understand the importance of pupils’ regular attendance. You have also made tough decisions to discourage parents taking their children out of school during term time for
holidays, which has also been effective.'
(Ofsted 2018)

We will share a common goal in our school’s journey to what we want our school to achieve and where we want it to go. Our flexible and imaginative approach will help us to innovate and implement new initiatives successfully.  We will promote excellence, equality and high expectations for everyone. Standards will be high in all areas of the school’s work and there will be an atmosphere of challenge and support at all levels. Our learning environment will be an exciting and rewarding one.

We will encourage an energetic approach and a commitment to learning new skills, leading with passion and integrity. We will help children to develop creativity, originality and inquiring minds. They will become self-motivated learners. A caring approach, good manners, respect and helpfulness will be modelled and reflected by all. Children will become responsible, reliable and trustworthy. They will be courageous and have a sense of loyalty and honesty. They will learn to tolerate, respect and support each other.  Our children will be confident speakers, who know their individual worth and who know how to keep themselves safe.

Our children will be highly literate, numerate and articulate with the self-confidence to develop their own attitudes, beliefs and values. Computing will be central to the development of personalised learning. New technologies will continue to enhance the teaching and learning opportunities in school and deepen children’s understanding of the wider world. The curriculum will provide a broad range of creative, sporting and artistic opportunities through which the children will experience discovery and success.

At Wombwell Park Street Primary School, we are dedicated to creating an atmosphere of nurture, inspiration, respect and positive relationships; a place where all pupils, staff, parents and the wider community feel valued, accepted, safe and happy. We will encourage all pupils to have a voice and we will actively promote positive wellbeing. We will support all to have a positive self-image through the use of our Incredible Me! approach and a strong focus on living a healthy lifestyle. We will embed a culture of resilience where children, staff and the wider community will not accept anything other than being the best versions of themselves. Mutual respect will be the string that ties everything together so that all are treated fairly in our inclusive atmosphere.

At our school everyone is included, valued and respected. We believe in a tailored, adaptive teaching approach to learning which ensures that individual pupils’ needs and abilities are fully catered for. Everyone will be given the opportunity to fulfil their potential and become the best that they can possibly be.  Our Team will be inspired.

Our school staff team aim to:
  • Equip children with the skills, knowledge and understanding they will need for life-long learning in the 21st century.
  • Offer a deep, broad and balanced education, maintaining high expectations of pupils’ achievements, with a strong commitment to improving the basic skills of all learners.
  • Provide an extended range of experiences.
  • Create a school community whose members can live a full, happy and secure life and achieve their full potential.
  • Help children to develop creativity, originality and inquiring minds and become self-motivating learners.
  • Provide a stimulating and caring environment which promotes positive attitudes to exploration, investigations and logical thinking.
  • Help children to develop as moral and caring individuals with high self-esteem who are sensitive to the needs of others.
  • Meet the needs and interests of all learners with a strong commitment to Inclusion and Equality of Opportunity for all.
  • Encourage children to take responsibility and use initiative.
  • Achieve a collaborative partnership between staff, parents, governors and other members of the community.
  • Help children, parents and the community as a whole to become more aware of the environment and the need to conserve it.

Our Ofsted targets are (December 2023):
Target 1:
Leaders and those responsible for Governance should ensure that:
in all aspects of the curriculum, adults introduce new knowledge and practise existing knowledge in ways that help pupils to secure their learning.

Target 2:
Leaders and those responsible for Governance should ensure that the school:
builds on existing work to strengthen the PSHE curriculum so that pupils learn and remember the  knowledge that they need.

Our Basic Skills Quality Mark targets are (December 2019):
  • Improve the teaching and outcomes in phonics so staff are sufficiently knowledgeable and children make even better progress. Element 1, 2, 4, 6, 7
  • Improve spelling, vocabulary and speaking and listening so that higher order Reading skills impact on the progress and standards of reading across the school. Element 1, 3, 5, 7, 8.
  • To further develop problem-solving and reasoning skills in mathematics, particularly in pupils’ written work. (Elements: 1-3, 5, 7-8, 10).

Our current School Improvement Priorities are (2024-25):
WPSPS staff are currently working hard on the following school improvement priority areas, to help support with school developments.  This plan is based on progress and attainment data, teaching and learning monitoring, Governor monitoring and strength / needs analysis, attendance and persistent absenteeism data and pupil, staff and parent views.

Should you wish to have more information around these areas and the actions being taken to achieve these, then please contact Mrs C Lawson in school, who will be happy to talk through these areas and discuss the plan in full.
