This week we have explored the question “What do plants need to grow?”. We started the week listening attentively to ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. Our learning activities have included; ordering the life cycle of a bean, making a book cover with our name and a beanstalk illustration, building a castle, making a leaf to add to our class beanstalk, writing instructions on ‘How to plant a seed?’ and in our funky finger area we have had a track game where we had to build a beanstalk! On Tuesday, we learnt that plants need soil, water, air and light to grow and we have all planted our own bean seed which are excited to watch grow and we have been observing throughout the week to see if we can see any shoots! We have started to learn “The Planting Song” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a44NFSiIn54) and we have been learning Makaton signs to go with it too! Our Talk through Stories this week was ‘The Bear and The Piano’. We were able to identify the characters and the problem, we have learnt about the meanings of new words and we have taken on the role of the ‘Bear’ and carried out freeze-frames to show how we feel in different scenarios! In Literacy, our Year 1 children have written questions that they wanted to know about their job, they have them presented these to their peers and we have asked Google their questions to find out the answer! In Maths, Reception children have subitised numbers to 5, arranged 6 or 8 objects into groups that can be subitised, shown numbers from 5 to 10 in ‘5 and a bit’ arrangements, counted 20 objects, practised saying the ‘tricky’ teen numbers and practised counting to 100. We have also discussed strategies for counting larger amounts that can’t be moved. Year 1 children have learnt to; explain what happens when 2 is added to or subtracted from odd and even numbers, explain what the difference is between consecutive odd and even numbers and explained what happens when zero is added to or subtracted from a number. In Science, we have looked at the importance for humans of exercise, eating the right amount of different types of foods and hygiene. We know that exercise makes our muscles stronger, makes us flexible and improves our circulation. We know that there are 5 food groups and that each food group has an important job. We can name basic hygiene rules that prevent the spread of germs – we know that germs are super small living things that make us poorly!
In PSHE, our enquiry question has been “Why do we like and dislike different things?”. We know that other people have different likes, dislikes and opinions from ourselves and that it is okay but we know that it is still important to listen to the opinions of others. Our learning this week has focused on minibeasts and where they live. We started the week listening to the story “Superworm” by Julia Donaldson. This week our Funky Finger activity was to wind the thread around the worm templates to make our very own "Superworm"! Our other activities have included; writing about our favourite minibeasts, creating junk modelled minibeasts, painting finger print paintings and spotting doubles on ladybirds! We have had some fantastic independent writing this week and we are super proud! We have learnt to name a variety of different minibeasts and we know that insects have 6 legs and antennae. We have also learnt about some of the different micro-habitats that each minibeast lives in. On Welly Walk we had a wonderful time exploring our nature reserve hunting for different minibeast – we found; woodlice, bees, a wasp, a ladybird, worms, a spider and a beetle to name a few! In Literacy, our Year 1 children have continued with their unit of work on questions. This week that have worked had to come up with questions about different stimuli in preparation for writing questions about their chosen aspirational jobs next week. In Maths, our Reception children have spent the week exploring a new manipulative that they will be using in their learning going forward. The children learnt that it is called a "rekenrek" and we have spent lots of time learning how to use this equipment correctly learnt using ‘one finger, one push’ to move the beads. Our Year 1 children have been practising recalling pairs of numbers to 10, adding one to any number, subtracting one from any number and we have learnt to explain what the difference is between consecutive numbers. In Science, we have learnt about the three basic needs of animals, including humans, for survival – air, water and food and we can say why each need is important.
In PSHE, we explored feelings and began to show an understanding of not only our own feelings but of those around us. The Sunshines regularly have brain breaks where we take part in 'Just Dances' and repeat after me songs. This week we have enjoyed taking part in different yoga activities.
We spoke about how this helps our brain relax, to stay calm and focused and we know that this is good for our mental wellbeing Wow1 What a fantastic first week back we have had and we have done lots of amazing learning. We have started our new topic ‘Watch it Grow’. Our learning question this week has been on ‘How does it grow and change?’ with a focus on life cycles. We started the week listening to the story “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. This week in our Talk through Story time we have focused on this half-terms poem “Zanzibar” which is about a caterpillar growing into a butterfly – we will continue to practise reciting this poem throughout the half-term. Our learning activities this week have included; painting symmetrical butterflies, creating split pin frogs, sequencing the picture cards to retell the story, using our Fred Fingers to spell the foods that the caterpillar ate, creating a caterpillar on a leaf and making a domino rally in our funky finger area! We have also enjoyed playing our caterpillar track game with our friends! Our Reception children have been accessing their new RWI groups. In Literacy, our Year 1 children have started a new piece of work on questions. Our text driver for this unit of work is “An Engineer Like Me”. Our text is questions, audience is Miss Overton and our purpose is to generate questions to find out about an aspirational job. This week we have learnt that a question is a type of sentence that asks something and ends with a question mark not a full stop! We have learnt question words and identified these in a text and we have identified whether a sentence is a question or not In Maths, our Reception children have practised their subitising within 5. We have also been practising joining in with a backward count from 5 to 1 and ordered towers of cubes from 1-10 on a class number track, we have described the position of each number on a number track and we have looked at the rules for a new linear track game! In Maths, our Year 1 children have learnt to explain that addition and subtraction are inverse operation, learnt to explain that addition is commutative and we have begun to learn to find pairs of numbers to 10. In History, we have looked at the changes that were made in London after the fire. We know streets were made wider, houses were built further apart and that they were made out of brick. In RE, we recapped our learning on Ramadan and know that Muslim’s fast during Ramadan. We know that at the end of Ramadan Muslims break fast with a celebration called “Eid”. We know that Muslims celebrate Eid by getting new clothes, going to the Mosque and by have a party with their family and friends with lots of yummy food! We made some “Happy Eid-al-Fitr” cards which we passed to Mr Holmes to give to Mrs Chavan to take to Barnsley Mosque. In Science, we continued our learning on Animals including Humans and we looked at different life cycles including; humans, butterfly, chicken and frog. We know that the term ‘metamorphosis’ describes the change from a caterpillar to a butterfly. On Welly Walk, we took part in a Spring nature wall. We drew and wrote about what we could see, hear, feel and smell. We had a lovely time exploring our nature reserve in the sun and to see how it has changed from Winter to Spring.
lToday Team EO a trip to the library.
The grown-ups who supported at the library were super proud of how safely the children to and from the library! At the library we learnt about different types of books that they have including; non-fiction, audiobooks, board books and easy to read books. We then listened to the librarian read us a story informing us about different farm animals then completed a word search within our groups before exploring and reading the different books independently. We ended our library session listening to a fiction story! Our Reception children have continued to work hard in their RWI groups. Our Year 1 children have worked hard to write their diary entries – spelling the days of the week, using the conjunction ‘and’ and using the suffix ‘ed’! On Thursday we read our diary entries to our peers. In Maths, our Reception children started the week by recapping the names of 3D shapes – we know that these are solid shapes. We then moved onto recapping the numbers 6-9 using the ‘5 and a bit’ structure, recapped that 10 can be composed of 5 and 5 and identified when 10 is shown using structured arrangements of objects. Next, we explored ways in which 10 can be composed of 2 parts. Our Year 1 children have represented ‘first, then, now’ stories with subtraction equations using pictorial and abstract representations. We then worked out the missing part of addition stories and equations when two parts are known and worked out the missing part of subtraction stories and equations when two parts are known. In Science, we know that animals grow and change over their lifetime. We knew the names of given animals and their offspring and identified them in photos and have learnt which animals hatch from eggs and which animals have live young. In RE, we have learnt about the Easter story. We know that on ‘Maundy Thursday’ Jesus had his ‘last supper’, on Good Friday Jesus died on the cross and people were sad, on Saturday Jesus was put in the tomb and on Sunday Jesus rose from the dead and told his disciples to spread Gods love. We also discussed the different ways in which Christians celebrate Easter. These included; going to Church, sending Easter cards, having a special dinner and giving Easter eggs to represent new life.
This week we have been learning about “what is life like on a farm?” and “what is Easter?”. We started the week learning to name and sign different farm animals and where they live, the different jobs a farmer has, the various farm vehicles and we have learnt where food comes from! Our Talk through Stories this week was “Farmer Duck” and we have enjoyed joining in with repeated and favourite phrases!
Our learning activities this week have included; writing about what we see on the farm, colouring and writing Easter cards, creating split pin eggs, completing Easter dot-to-dots and practising our cutting skills to cut the animals out and stick them in their correct home! We have also enjoyed making chocolate cornflake buns! In Literacy, Year 1 children started our new unit of writing based on the text driver “Mr Wolf’s Week” by Colin Hawkins. Our text that we are working on is a diary which we are going to share with our peers to inform them what we have done on each day of the week! This week we have been practising spelling the days of the week correctly and using the conjunction ‘and’. On Thursday we started our diary entries and we were able to independently use the suffix ‘ed’. Reception children have been accessing fine motor groups to strengthen finger muscles and to practise letter formation. Here we are working hard to practise the formation of 'o'. In Maths, Reception children have learnt to identify a cube, sphere, cylinder and cone and identified whether these shapes stack or roll. We have recapped that there are 5 fingers on 1 hand and consolidated our use of finger patterns to represent the composition of 5. We have used pictorial representations and finger patterns to identify a missing part of 5. Our Year 1 children have represented ‘first, then, now’ stories with addition equations – we have done this using pictorial and abstract representations. In History, we have explained about how we know about the Great Fire of London. We discussed the different sources of information and know that cameras were not invented in 1666. We identified sources which are most and least helpful such as dairy entries and paintings or coins.
In Science, we have learnt that the season we are in is Spring. We looked at photos and know that in Spring the weather gets warmer and the days get longer. We know that some animals are born in Spring and that things start to grow – we discussed which signs of Spring we may see in our outdoor area and which we wouldn’t! On Friday, we took part in lots of different fundraising events to raise money for Comic Relief. We know that some children around the UK and the world aren’t as lucky as we are and that we are raising money to give to them to improve their lives. We raised money by wearing it ‘red-to-toe’, having a bun sale and a sponge throw at Mr Davison! In class we have completed word-searches, had colouring pictures and made faces with red noses! This week we have been learning about ‘under the sea’. We started the week listening carefully to ‘Commotion in the Ocean’. We have learned the names of different sea creatures, the Makaton signs for – crab, dolphin, fish, seahorse, whale, shark and whale and we have learnt some interesting facts about the sea creatures’ habitats and diet! In our Talk through Stories this week we have focused on poetry time and we have been listening carefully to ‘Oh, Oh, the Storyman’ – we are beginning to join in with phrases! We have also enjoyed singing songs related to animals under the sea.
Our provision activities have included; a under the sea jigsaw, using the watercolours to paint under the sea scenes, drawing our favourite sea creature and labelling it, using the peg boards to copy and make under the sea pictures, writing captions to match pictures and using the creative resources to make concertina fish puppets. What a fabulous week we have had! |
