The children have loved watching the growth of our caterpillars this week and there has been so much language and talk while observing closely. We cannot believe how much they have grown throughout the week and today we noticed that some of them have moved onto the lid and begun to hang down. "I think they are getting ready to spin their cocoon" said one of our Shooting Stars! We cannot wait to see what has happened after the weekend!

We had lots of fun playing together with our parachute outside today. There is lots of team work involved in this as we have to work together to make it move. We also played some listening and turn taking games. This was also great for developing our gross motor skills as we moved in lots of different ways.
In our Maths learning, we have been practising our careful counting by making sure we point slowly and carefully saying one number for each item. Today we played a ladybird spots game to help us. We had to count the spots on the ladybird (or quickly subitise the amount if we could) and then click on the matching numeral. We played the game together at carpet time and then the children played independently during provision time. They also learnt that the interactive whiteboard doesn't work if more than one person taps at once and so they learnt to take turns with their friends too.
In our creative area, we have been learning how to use boxes, tubes and other materials to create our own 3D minibeasts. We have learnt how to choose suitable materials and to attach them using tape and glue. Here we are working hard on our creations:
Today we went on a minibeast hunt in our outdoor area. We used our magnifying glasses to look very carefully and talk about what we could see. We learnt that minibeasts like to live in dark, damp places so we looked under stones and logs as well as amongst the flowers. We found worms, a snail, a fly, woodlice, ants, a spider, a ladybird and a bee. The children were keen to talk about what they looked like as well as how they were moving. They also used their mark making skills to tick off what they found on our spotters sheet.
This week we are continuing our "Watch it Grow" theme with a focus on minibeasts. Our book of the week is Mad about Minibeasts and today we read the book and learnt the names of lots of different types of minibeasts. We also used Singing Hands to learn how to say and sign using Makaton- ladybird, spider, worm, caterpillar, butterfly, snail, slug, ant, bee and fly. Over the week we will also be extending our knowledge by learning to name grasshopper, dragonfly, beetle and earwig. We will be saying the names and clapping out the syllables to help us make sure we say all the parts of the word. The older children will also be counting the syllables (claps) and sorting the minibeasts into groups based on how many syllables they have.
This afternoon, we went on our welly walk to the nature reserve and were surprised to find that there were lots of changes since before Easter and lots more signs of Spring to observe! We saw lots of flowers including blossom, blue bells, cowslips and daffodils. We enjoyed hearing the birds singing in the trees and the children were very excited to see a few butterflies fluttering around.
Here we are exploring and having fun together: We have been very creative in the provision this week and have been practising lots of different skills. In the mark making area, we have been drawing different patterns on our butterfly wings and trying to make them symmetrical. In the creative area, we have been choosing materials to stick onto our butterflies to decorate them. Some children also chose to cut out their butterfly and they have made so much progress with their cutting skills! We have some very creative children in nursery.
For our baking activity today, we decorated butterfly biscuits. Firstly we learnt to mix icing sugar and water to make the icing and then we used a spoon to carefully pour and spread it onto our biscuit. Then we had a challenge to use our pincer grip to carefully pick up the toppings and add them to the biscuit. Our challenge was to try and arrange them so they were symmetrical and some of us managed this all by ourselves!
On Monday, we had a delivery of 5 live caterpillars which we are hoping to look after and watch them grow into butterflies! We looked very carefully at them and noticed that they were very tiny and very still! During the week, we have kept watching them and we cannot believe how much they have grown already! We have also noticed that they are eating the food in the bottom of the pot and are now doing lots of moving around too! We are looking forward to checking on their progress after the weekend.
