Subject aims:
We aim to provide pupils with the knowledge and skills needed to develop the creative and practical expertise needed to complete a wide range of tasks and challenges. We aim to provide pupils with a thorough understanding of design and technology: in the world today, through history exploring innovation and design through time and in relation to  possibilities for the future. Pupils will have the opportunity to plan, make and evaluate their own work. All pupils will engage in high quality lessons learning about food technology, nutrition and cookery. Staff have a clear understanding of the progression of knowledge, skills and vocabulary needed to challenge all pupils as appropriate to their age and stage of learning. Where appropriate we encourage pupils to make conceptual links across the curriculum. Projects are set within meaningful cross- curriculum contexts in order to give activities and projects a clear purpose. We encourage aspiration and make it clear to pupils that careers in design, food technology and engineering are tangible options for them to consider.
The aims for art from the National Curriculum are fully embedded into our provision to ensure that all pupils:
-  develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently        and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world 
-  build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make                high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users 
-  critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
​-  understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

How is the subject taught?
Lessons my be taught weekly, developed through termly projects or blocked during our annual Science and Technology week. Please refer to Design & Technology Overview for specific details for each year group and class.

How is the subject assessed?
Assessment for learning takes place in lessons through questioning, discussion, target setting and evaluation. Pupils are given regular opportunities to reflect on their own work and set themselves targets. Teachers use school tracking and assessment documents to record each pupils progress. this is reported to parents on annual reports and throughout the year during parent, pupil and teacher meetings.

CURRENT SUBJECT INFORMATION RELATING TO COVID-19 AND REOPENING OF SCHOOLS (SEPTEMBER 2020) FOLLOWING PARTIAL SCHOOL CLOSURES.

Since returning to school in September following partial school closures due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we have been working hard to identify the areas of learning individual pupils may need to catch up on. As always, we are making core subjects the priority - particularly the basic skills of numeracy and literacy. However here at Wombwell Park Street, we are passionate about our broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum offer and feel now more than ever pupils need the opportunity to engage in a wide range of learning opportunities. Children will be accessing the full range of curriculum subjects this year.Should you need any further information relating to provision in Design and Technology, Miss Taylor and Mrs Longden will be happy to answer any questions.
