Maths

'There are also strong links between different subjects, and reading, writing and mathematics are well reinforced across the curriculum.'

Subject aims:
At Wombwell Park Street, we aim to ensure all our children are competent mathematicians, both mentally and on paper. We expect all children to know their times tables, as well as addition and subtraction facts, in line with the National Curriculum 2014 and apply their mastery mathematics skills to the wider world.

How is the subject taught?

Maths at Wombwell Park Street is taught in innovative ways and is based on the concrete - pictorial -abstract approach (CPA). Children are actively encouraged to use resources, whatever their ability, to develop, understand and prove mathematical concepts.
Our maths provision is based on the 'Teaching for Mastery' approach. The main principles underpinning this are detailed by the NCETM (2016) as:
  • Maths teaching for mastery rejects the idea that a large proportion of people ‘just can’t do maths’.
  • All pupils are encouraged by the belief that by working hard at maths they can succeed.
  • Pupils are taught through whole-class interactive teaching, where the focus is on all pupils working together on the same lesson content at the same time, as happens in Shanghai and several other regions that teach maths successfully. This ensures that all can master concepts before moving to the next part of the curriculum sequence, allowing no pupil to be left behind.
  • If a pupil fails to grasp a concept or procedure, this is identified quickly and early intervention ensures the pupil is ready to move forward with the whole class in the next lesson.
  • Lesson design identifies the new mathematics that is to be taught, the key points, the difficult points and a carefully sequenced journey through the learning.  In a typical lesson the teacher leads back and forth interaction, including questioning, short tasks, explanation, demonstration, and discussion.
  • Procedural fluency and conceptual understanding are developed in tandem because each supports the development of the other.
  •  It is recognised that practice is a vital part of learning, but the practice used is intelligent practice that both reinforces pupils’ procedural fluency and develops their conceptual understanding.
  • Significant time is spent developing deep knowledge of the key ideas that are needed to underpin future learning. The structure and connections within the mathematics are emphasised, so that pupils develop deep learning that can be sustained.
  • Key facts such as multiplication tables and addition facts within 10 are learnt to automaticity to avoid cognitive overload in the working memory and enable pupils to focus on new concepts.
We firmly believe that following these principles will ensure the children at Wombwell Park Street continue to be successful in mathematics and crucially, see themselves as mathematicians.

How is the subject assessed?
Maths is continually assessed as part of first wave teaching and learning. In daily learning, children are assessed formatively through Assessment for Learning, and given guidance and support on how they can further develop  their arithmetic and reasoning skills. In order to ensure that teacher assessment correlates with the national expectations, a series of summative assessments are also conducted on a termly basis. In addition to this, a Multiplication Tables Check is administered to our Year 4 pupils. Also, at the end of Key Stage 1 children sit a SATs arithmetic and reasoning paper to ensure that the children are in line with the national expectations set. This is repeated at the end of Key Stage 2 with Year 6 SATs tests. Other year groups mimic this process through their own summative assessments to help prepare children.

Coverage across year groups.
Maths is a broad area of the curriculum and one which we have worked hard to develop. To further understand the key coverage across year groups please refer to the End of Year expectations for Maths document which can be found on each class' web page. These are specific to each of the relevant year groups.
