Geography

Subject Leader
Mrs L Longden

Governor Leader
Mrs A Holdsworth
Subject aims:
We aim to ensure pupils develop a greater understanding of the world, as well as their place in it. Our geography curriculum enables pupils to develop a robust understanding of the human and physical geography of their locality; this is then used as a frame of reference to learn about other places in the UK and around the world. Staff understand the clear progression of location, mapping and fieldwork skills, vocabulary and knowledge this is utilised to challenge all pupils as appropriate for their age and stage of learning. We aim to encourage natural inquisitiveness and foster a love of geography through planning a range of engaging learning opportunities both in the classroom and our school grounds  and through educational visits and field trips. We enable pupils to develop knowledge and skills, which are transferable to other curricular areas and we make conceptual links explicit.

The aims for art from the National Curriculum are fully embedded into our provision to ensure that all pupils:
-   develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places – both terrestrial and              marine – including their defining physical and human characteristics and how these provide a                    geographical context for understanding the actions of processes
-  understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the
world, how these are interdependent and how they bring about spatial variation and change over time -   are competent in the geographical skills needed to:
*collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of                            fieldwork that deepen their understanding of geographical processes
*interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes,
aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
              * communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical
and quantitative skills and writing at length.

How is the subject taught?
We have a whole school Geography focus during the Autumn Term where the majority of the geography curriculum is taught. However, cross curricular geographical themes, mapping skills and elements of locational knowledge are taught and developed throughout the year. Please refer to the whole school Geography overview for more details.

How is the subject assessed?
Assessment for learning takes place in lessons through questioning, discussion, target setting and evaluation. Pupils are given regular opportunities to reflect on their own work and set themselves targets. Teachers use school tracking and assessment documents to record each pupils progress. this is reported to parents on annual reports and throughout the year during parent, pupil and teacher meetings.

Coverage across year groups

Please refer to the geography subject overview document, which can be accessed via the link below, for full details of coverage and progression through school.
