Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development

SMSC at Park Street

​At Wombwell Park Street we prioritise the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our pupils. SMSC development is embedded within our provision in a range of ways through: our carefully designed broad and progressive curriculum, high quality teaching and learning opportunities, our extra-curricular and enrichment offer, the promotion of our school ethos and positive expectations around behaviour and relationships, promotion of pupil leadership and engagement with our school, local, national and international community.
We define SMSC as
Spiritual development – Pupils to have the ability to be reflective about their own beliefs (religious or otherwise) and perspective on life. To have knowledge of, and respect for different people’s faiths, feelings and values. To have a sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning about themselves, others, and the world around them. To use imagination and creativity in their learning.
Moral development – Pupils to have the ability to recognise the difference between right and wrong and to apply this understanding to their own lives. To understand the consequences of their behaviours and actions. To have an interest in investigating and offering reasoned views about moral and ethical issues and the ability to understand and appreciate the viewpoints of others – even if they are different to their own. To recognise legal boundaries and respect the civil and criminal law of England.
Social development – Pupils using a range of social skills in different contexts. A willingness to participate in a variety of communities and social settings (e.g. volunteering, cooperating with others and being able to resolve conflicts). Ability to accept and engage with British Values and develop the skills required to contribute positively to life in modern Britain.
Cultural development – To understand and appreciate the wide range of cultural influences that have shaped their own heritage and that of others. Understand and appreciate the range of cultures in the school, local area and nationally. To recognise and value the things we share in common across cultural, religious, ethnic and socio-economic communities. Willingness to participate in and respond positively to artistic, musical, sporting and cultural opportunities. To develop interest in exploring, improving and understanding and showing respect for different faiths and cultural diversity.

​Under the broad umbrella of spiritual, moral, social and cultural development we prioritise the teaching of British Values.  Our curriculum is underpinned by our commitment to character education and the virtues we have identified as essential; we have also identified key curriculum drivers which re-enforce our commitment to comprehensive and well-rounded personal development for all our pupils.

​Curriculum Drivers

Oracy and Communication: To ensure pupils have the opportunity to develop their skills of communication. To develop vocabulary. To ensure the purpose and audience for tasks is clear. To develop confidence when expressing ideas, information thoughts and opinions and listen respectfully to others.
Respect and Relationships: Respect for themselves, others, rules, property, religions, cultures and the environment.
Being Safe and Healthy: Understanding the importance being safe. Understanding the importance of mental and physical health and wellbeing.
Aspiration and Achievement: Making excellent progress in order to attain well. Ensuring pupils know more and remember more and understand how and where concepts link together. Nurturing talent, passion and ambition. Ensuring all pupils drive for and achieve their potential in a wide range of areas. Learning about careers in a range of disciplines. 
Enjoyment, Creativity and Engagement : Providing opportunities for pupils to learn in exciting and engaging ways. To foster a life-long love for learning. Ensuring all pupils build cultural capital through a well thought out and comprehensive range of curricular, wider-curricular and enrichment opportunities.​
