Remote Learning

Remote Learning Leader: Mr A Fidment

Remote Learning Offer at
Wombwell Park Street Primary School

Throughout the autumn term of 2020, Park Street has been able to plan and revise the home learning offer, as a result of two bubble closures (Team AF and Team GG).  Teachers and the Senior Leadership Team have trailed ideas and listened to parental feedback and believe that the current remote learning offer supports both children, parents and staff.  It is also allowing for all staff to teach in school with children belonging to key workers and those deemed vulnerable, during the third lockdown (January 2021). This has lead to us creating a home learning package that we feel will support the needs of children, parents and staff. This offer is explained in detail in the following home learning policy:

When a bubble is closed (due to a positive case or lockdown), the first day of learning will be on Seesaw. However, staff will be ensuring that learning meets a high standard so marking and feedback will be limited and there will be no live teaching/Zoom calls. Our full learning offer will apply from the second day of closure.

The use of Seesaw:

In Lockdown 1 (March-June 2020), the school purchased a remote learning platform called 'Seesaw'.  This worked efficiently and effectively and so we have continued with this platform.  Staff, parents and children are all familiar with the platform and we believe it to be very 'user friendly'.  Each morning, work is scheduled by teachers and available for all children to begin to work through from 8am.

Teachers are aiming to provide the children in their bubble (both at home and in school), with work which requires the following amount of time to be spent on it:
Children in Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6) - 4 hours of learning
Children in Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) - 3 hours of learning
Children in EYFS (Nursery and Reception) - 1-3 hours of learning

Staff are, as closely as possible, mirroring work at home and school, so as all children have as equal an opportunity to learning as physically possible.  Throughout the day, children at home complete and submit work back to their teacher / teaching assistants within their bubble online.  This will be 'liked' and then where applicable, comments will be made (both for praise and to clear any misconceptions).  Children are encouraged to communicate through Seesaw and ask any questions they have and staff are expected to respond to these promptly.  The same / similar work is completed in school by those children currently still attending. An explanation of how staff will mark and feedback to learning can be found in our Home Learning Policy. In addition to this, staff from Y1-6 will be offering 'open Zoom meetings'. This means that pupils will be able to drop back into their morning Zoom link, ask questions, receive feedback and be given support in any areas of their learning that they are finding more challenging.

Key worker and vulnerable children who are currently attending school have been invited to do so on a full time basis and therefore do not need to complete the work on Seesaw at home.  This will have been completed in school.  However, some parents who only need part time provision in school, who are not sending their child to school every day, still need to ensure that their child is accessing Seesaw and completing work at home on the days that they are not in school.  This is to ensure that learning can still be maintained - the progression of skills and knowledge is built upon across the week and units of work and any missed learning will be a barrier to the children's progress.  We want to keep as much learning happening as possible!

Using Seesaw

The following link will show you a video to support with the use of Seesaw.

Zoom Call Arrangements:

As well as the use of Seesaw, each bubble team also has a 30 minute window for a Zoom call in a morning.  These calls are all at different times to allow the school's broadband to be able to manage the calls, but also to support families at home who might have children in a number of different bubbles.  These Zoom calls are a chance for staff to:
  • register the children (and check on attendance)
  • check-in with the children and ensure they are  happy, fit and well (wellbeing and safeguarding)
  • share their screen and model key learning and explain learning methods which children need to use
  • set high expectations for children to learn (whether at school / home)
  • provide answers to any questions that children / parents may have
  • allow children to socialise with each other and maintain friendships
  • maintain key relationships between the staff and children.
It is important to note that children in school watch this same model on the video call, but children in school are not on camera, just members of staff and children at home.  This is to safeguard vulnerable children in school.  There is no requirement for children at home to have to have their camera on and we request that children / parents at home ensure good safeguarding of their child whilst on screen (eg children fully clothed, not in bedrooms and with an adult close by).

Work can be completed in and out of school prior to the Zoom calls and then afterwards.  In some bubbles, the meeting is being left 'open' for children to rejoin afterwards and ask any key questions that they have from staff in school.  Staff in school in bubbles monitor this Zoom call throughout the day and clear up any misconceptions that such children may have.  This is working effectively and may be rolled out in other bubbles in due course.

The Zoom calls are currently being held at the following times:
Team WP (Reception) - 9.30-9.45am
Team CC (Reception / 1) - 9.15-9.30am
Team CH (Year 1) - 9.45-10.15am
Team CT (Year 2) - 10.45-11.15am
Team AC (Year 2 / 3) - 11.15-11.45am
Team GG (Year 3) - 10.45-11.15am
Team JF (Year 4) - 10.15-10.45am
Team JD (Year 4) - 9-9.30am
Team AF (Year 5) - 10.15-10.45am
Team LG (Year 5) - 9.45-10.15am
Team LL (Year 6) - 11.45- 12.15pm

Our intention as a school is to also provide the additional support which some children receive in school, to support their special educational needs.  This will also be done via Zoom calls from staff in school to those at home.  Invites for these will be sent on Seesaw.

Marking and Feedback

When children are carrying out home learning, it is important that children get some form of feedback to know that their work is being acknowledged. When a lockdown takes place, ALL staff members from the class will take on a responsibility for monitoring Seesaw. The following will be expected to take place:
  • each piece of work will be ‘liked’
  • where children have not achieved the objective of the learning, a comment or some form of explanation will be given
  • some marking will be done to identify achievements against success criteria (green and pink highlighting)
  • comments from children will be monitored and responded to where necessary.
In addition to this, there will be some opportunities to have Zoom 'drop-in' meetings. In these, staff will support children on a 1-1 basis and explain misconceptions to ensure that they are achieving the learning objective.

Marking will occur daily and, where possible, feedback will be given to pupils continually throughout the school day as learning is submitted.

Support for Parents:

We recognise that this remote way of learning is alien to many parents and understand the pressures that this may well put families under.  As a result, we are keen to support and have the following in place for parents to access.

Zoom workshops for parents to join WB 11.1.21:
Nursery, Reception and Reception / 1 Teams - Tuesday 12th January 2021 at 5pm
Team CH, CT  and AC - Wednesday 13th January 2021 at 5pm
Team GG, JF and JD - Thursday 14th January 2021 at 5pm
Team AF, LG and LL - Friday 15th January 2021 at 5pm

At these meetings, Mr Fidment and Mrs Lawson will be happy to demonstrate the use of Seesaw and Zoom, to help support parents in better supporting their children with remote learning.  Zoom invites have been sent to all relevant parents to join.

Ongoing support for parents:
From WB 18.1.21 a weekly Zoom meeting invite will be sent to all parents to join who have any questions relating to remote learning.  This will provide opportunities for parents to ask questions and find out the most effective ways of supporting children at home.  These invites will be sent out each week and will take place from 5-6pm every Wednesday until the end of lockdown 3.

A 'Questions & Answers' document has been developed, with some commonly asked questions from parents.  This can be found below under 'Home Learning Correspondence'.

Should you have any queries then by all means contact your child's class teacher as a priority and then if you need further support, then Mr Fidment will be happy to answer any questions and support further.

Digitally Disadvantaged

The term digitally disadvantaged refers to pupils who do not have access to a device or the internet at home. With learning taking place online, it is crucial that children are able to access a device to support them. As a school, we will implement measures to ensure that we are supporting children to access this learning. The following measures will be put in place:
  • If a child does not have access to a device, they will be able to complete a loan agreement and use a tablet that has been purchased to support home learning.
  • If a child does not have access to a device, it may be possible to offer them a laptop that has been given to school by the DfE.
  • If a child does not have access to the internet, measures will be put in place to try to support this. This will include issuing a data Sim card.
  • If a child prefers to access paper based learning, staff will print out the learning and this can be collected from the office or we will arrange for this to be dropped off at their home location. However, we will be encouraging the use of a device to ensure that our pupils access the teaching through Zoom.
IF you do require support with accessing a device, please contact Mr A Fidment.

SEND

For children in our school who are classed as having Special Educational Needs or an EHCP, the learning offer may looks different to the whole school approach. If a personalised approach is used, staff will closely discuss this with parents so that they are aware of expectations. Part of this offer may be more frequent meetings on Zoom to provide a more scaffold approach to support children.
The School's SEN team (Mrs Vaughton, Mr Fidment and Mrs Dodson) will be closely monitoring the provision and supporting staff and pupils to ensure they are supported during any closures.
