New to Park Street

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are not in a position to allow parental visitors in to the school to look around as we would normally do.

Instead, please find information below from the school's Senior Leaders, who talk through aspects of the school life.

Should you require any further information, do not hesitate to contact one of us in school and we would be happy to talk further and answer any questions you may have.

Many thanks for your understanding.

Mrs Lawson

Picture
My name is Mrs Chloe Lawson and I am the proud Headteacher of Wombwell Park Street Primary School.  I have had the pleasure of working at Park Street for the past ten years.  I have loved every minute of working with outstanding colleagues to make Park Street the school it is today.  Our school is a lovely school with amazing children and the most hardworking staff team I have ever worked with.  Each and every member of staff are so committed to making Park Street the best it can be.  Because of this, our children love coming to school and are very happy learners!
We have very high expectations around behaviour and encourage all children to be responsible, reliable and respectful members of our school community.  We call ourselves TEAM Park Street – the children and staff have excellent relationships with each other and this helps us to make sure the children thrive and achieve their full potential.  Safeguarding is one of our top priorities and our strong relationships with parents allow us to do this effectively.  We openly welcome parental feedback on school life and work with parents together to make the school a great place to attend and work.  We try, in normal times, to involve parents by inviting them in to school for coffee morning fundraisers, workshops, parental evenings and to watch class performances etc.  Our school has a Parental Group who actively seek to raise money for school funds and organise special events for the children to enjoy.
Over the years we have worked hard to continually remodel our curriculum so as it best meets the needs of our children.  We focus on the basic skills of reading, writing and maths, but also aim to deepen the children’s knowledge and skills in the wider curriculum, in a progressive manner.  We love to enrich their days with visits and visitors and real ‘hands on’, exciting opportunities to learn.  As such, our children are a very lively, creative and curious bunch!
We encourage our children to also develop their skills in areas such as team work, communication and being reflective.  We firmly believe that developing such skills from an early age are of paramount importance as they will need these later in life, when they enter their place of work.  We also place a lot of emphasis on good attendance and punctuality too because we firmly believe these are other important life lessons that should be learned at an early age.  We encourage positive behaviours for learning and active engagement in lesson times, so as children can learn as much as possible, as deeply as possible and as quickly as possible.
Our school normally offers a variety of after school clubs for the children to access.  This further enriches their experiences of school and quite often provides much needed child care for parents.  We offer a before and after school paid provision for working parents to access should they need to.  All of our extra-curricular clubs are very popular amongst the children!
Overall, Park Street is a good school with a very committed staff team and amazing children. Who are a delight to spend time with.  Children who attend Park Street achieve well and make strong progress from starting points.
Should you want any further information, please do not hesitate to get in contact by either emailing or telephoning the school.  Please read some further information about Park Street below, from our Senior Leadership Team members and have a look at the rest of the school website.
We look forward to hearing from you!

Mrs Longden

My name is Mrs Louise Longden. I have the privilege of being the Year 6 Class Teacher and the Deputy Head Teacher at Wombwell Park Street Primary School. I work alongside Mrs Lawson as part of the senior leadership team. I thoroughly enjoy my role as class teacher working with the oldest pupils at Park Street, supporting them with the incredibly challenging content of the Year 6 curriculum.   I lead on a number of other areas in school including: Pupil Premium, the wider curriculum and I am also joint safeguarding lead. I am passionate about the arts and feel incredibly proud to be part of a team who work tirelessly to help the pupils in our care discover and develop a wide range of skills and talents.
Wider Curriculum
The children and staff at Wombwell Park Street Primary School are incredibly proud of our curriculum offer. In addition to promoting high standards in the basic skills of maths and English we endeavour to provide meaningful and engaging learning experiences across the full range of national curriculum subjects. We make it a priority to instil in our pupils the importance of developing the knowledge and skills needed to ensure they are well prepared for the next phase of education and beyond.  Subject leaders have worked with teachers to plan out a clear progression of knowledge and skills in each subject to ensure that work for all pupils in all subjects is challenging and appropriate to the individual needs of the children. This content is delivered through a series of well-planned lessons. Through transition meetings and discussions in class the children are involved with curriculum planning and are regularly allowed to give their input.  We have developed thorough planning and assessment systems to enable us to closely plan and monitor progress. We strive where possible to allow pupils to make links and develop their vocabulary. For further information relating to our school curriculum or specific subject areas taught in school please follow the links below.

Miss McGinnes

Picture
My name is Miss McGinnes and I am very proud to be the Early Years and Key Stage One leader at Wombwell Park Street Primary School. I also teach in nursery and have the absolute privilege of sharing the magic of learning with the children every day! In addition to this I lead on Literacy in school, particularly early reading and phonics, which I absolutely love.
At Park Street we are very passionate about the early years being a child’s first step into the world of education and aim to make this time as challenging, exciting and fun as we can for all our children. We are aware that all children are unique and ensure that we spend lots of quality time getting to know the children as individuals and making them feel safe, secure and happy.
Our early years curriculum is predominantly play-based with lots of opportunities for children to practise and apply the skills they have been taught in focused teaching sessions with the adults. We have developed an outstanding learning environment, both indoors and outside, with open ended, high quality resources to challenge children to learn through play. Every moment is a learning moment in our early years and we love to celebrate all the children’s achievements.  We have high expectations for all children and support everyone to reach their full potential.
Throughout the day in early years, children will have the opportunity to engage in a mixture of focused teaching sessions led by the adults in class on either a whole class, small group or individual basis as well as opportunities for them to explore and learn through play in our continuous provision. We have lots of highly skilled adults who work with the children as they play, asking questions and developing their learning further through talk and challenges. We respond to the children’s own interests and aim to include these in our learning plans as this is the best way to motivate the children and encourage them to become engaged and keen learners.
At Park Street we are particularly passionate about reading and believe that reading is the key to unlocking the rest of the curriculum. In all our classrooms and around school, you will find books and reading materials everywhere! We have stimulating reading areas and books throughout the provision to encourage children to develop a love of reading. Our passionate staff share exciting, high quality stories with the children throughout the day and, in the early years, all our learning themes are based around books. Alongside developing the love of reading, we also provide children with the skills needed to be able to decode words and read for themselves. Our children learn to read very quickly and make rapid progress as we teach sounds and blending right from the very first day they enter school and quickly progress onto reading words and then sentences. Our children quickly learn the magic of reading and want to become readers for themselves!
Please visit our early years blog pages for further information and an insight into the types of learning activities we engage in every day.

Mr Fidment

Picture
Hello, my name is Mr Fidment. I am Park Street’s SENDCo and Year 5 class teacher. As SENDCo, I am incredibly passionate about ensuring that children with special educational needs and disabilities thrive during their time at Wombwell Park Street. I work closely with the leadership team, teachers and teaching assistants across school ensure that we have a high quality SEN provision that meets the needs of all our pupils. As part of this, I support class teachers to scaffold learning for children who are finding areas of learning difficult and look at strategies that can be put in place to provide a challenging curriculum to allow our most able pupils to flourish. We are an inclusive school, with a dedicated team of staff who are experienced in successfully supporting children with a wide range of needs. A part of my role I enjoy the most is getting to know parents and carers. We believe partnerships with parents are essential and encourage parents to be involved in making decision about their child’s provision.

In addition to this, I have passion for child development and how children’s behaviour changes as they develop. I often provide support for parents to help them understand their child’s behaviour at home and strategies that can be put in place to support challenging behaviour. I have developed these strategies with staff in school to support healthy ‘right time’ brain development within our setting.

I also lead on Maths and Computing. Our Maths’ curriculum is based around the mastery approach and our planning is often influenced by White Rose Maths. We are strong believers in giving all of our pupils the opportunity to achieve in our Maths curriculum. Children of all ages are give the opportunity to explore concepts using resources. This allows them to understand what is being taught and how each concept works so they can apply this to different Mathematical scenarios. Children in our school often comment about how much they enjoy maths.

Frequently asked questions...

Q1 - Does the school give the children the opportunity to play a musical instrument?
Yes.  When your child reaches Year 4, they have the opportunity to learn how to play the Ukulele.  We also allow Barnsley's Music Service in to school to provide individual/group lessons for children (paid for by parents).

Q2 - Does the school have before and after school clubs for child care?
Yes.  The school has MAC which runs from 8-8.35am and Kidz Club which runs from 3.15-5.45pm.  These offers and times are slightly different at the moment due to COVID-19.  The clubs are competitively priced and very popular.

Q3 - Will my child be in a mixed age class?
Possibly yes.  Our admissions number is 45 for Years R - Y3, 50 for Years 4 and 5 and 34 for Year 6.  So, at the moment, we have a variety of mixed and single classes.  In a few years time, each year group will be the permanent 45 and this will mean each year group has a class of 30 and then 15 children in a different class with children of a different age.  No matter what class your child is in they will be taught the curriculum content for their age and our teachers are skilled at matching work to the needs of the individual children.  This has been the case at Park Street for many years and we have lots of experience in ensuring the children's needs are always met.

Q4 - What are the arrangements for lunch times?
All children in Reception to Year 2 are entitled to Universal Free School Meals (UFSM).  This means that all children in Reception - Y2 can choose a lunch from a menu in school which has a variety of healthy choices.  Alternatively your child can bring a packed lunch from home.  When your child gets to KS2, they are still able to select from the same menu, but the cost is currently £2.06 (unless they are entitled to Free School Meals.

Q5 - Will my child get the opportunity to go on school trips?
Yes!  Park Street is really committed to ensuring children have a variety of learning opportunities and experiences.  Each year your child will go on at least one school trip and also learn from visitors who may come to the school to share their knowledge and experiences.

Q6 - What are the strengths of the school?
Welcoming and friendly ethos; team spirit; teaching of core subjects and skills and opportunity to apply within a broad and balanced curriculum; excellent behaviour by the children due to high expectations and a nurturing staff team; the provision for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN); pupil progress.
