Subject aims:
We aim to foster a love for music and an appreciation of the importance of music from various times places and cultures. Pupils will be given the opportunity perform, listen to, appraise, compose, review and evaluate music as appropriate for their age and stage of learning. Staff have a clear understanding of the progression of vocabulary, skills and knowledge, which they use to ensure all pupils are challenged. We feel it is important for pupils to have the opportunity to enjoy live music and meet musicians in order to realise a career in teaching, making or producing music is a tangible career goal. We aim for every pupil to leave Park Street able to play at least one instrument. We aim to offer a wide range of extra-curricular music activities and clubs. In striving for excellence, we ensure all pupils have the opportunity to engage in local and national events, initiatives and competitions.
The aims for art from the National Curriculum are fully embedded into our provision to ensure that all pupils:
- perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and
traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
- learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others,
have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the
opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
- understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the
inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate
musical notations.
How is the subject taught?
Music may be taught in weekly lessons, blocked through cross-curricular projects with elements covered in the annual arts week. Please refer to the subject overview document below for specific details relating to the delivery model for specific year groups.
How is the subject assessed?
Assessment for learning takes place in lessons through questioning, discussion, pupil's work well planned assessment activities, target setting and evaluation. Pupils are given regular opportunities to reflect on their own work and set themselves targets. Teachers monitor and make a record of each pupils progress. this is reported to parents on annual reports and throughout the year during parent, pupil and teacher meetings.
