Wow1 What a fantastic first week back we have had and we have done lots of amazing learning. We have started our new topic ‘Watch it Grow’. Our learning question this week has been on ‘How does it grow and change?’ with a focus on life cycles. We started the week listening to the story “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. This week in our Talk through Story time we have focused on this half-terms poem “Zanzibar” which is about a caterpillar growing into a butterfly – we will continue to practise reciting this poem throughout the half-term. Our learning activities this week have included; painting symmetrical butterflies, creating split pin frogs, sequencing the picture cards to retell the story, using our Fred Fingers to spell the foods that the caterpillar ate, creating a caterpillar on a leaf and making a domino rally in our funky finger area! We have also enjoyed playing our caterpillar track game with our friends! Our Reception children have been accessing their new RWI groups. In Literacy, our Year 1 children have started a new piece of work on questions. Our text driver for this unit of work is “An Engineer Like Me”. Our text is questions, audience is Miss Overton and our purpose is to generate questions to find out about an aspirational job. This week we have learnt that a question is a type of sentence that asks something and ends with a question mark not a full stop! We have learnt question words and identified these in a text and we have identified whether a sentence is a question or not In Maths, our Reception children have practised their subitising within 5. We have also been practising joining in with a backward count from 5 to 1 and ordered towers of cubes from 1-10 on a class number track, we have described the position of each number on a number track and we have looked at the rules for a new linear track game! In Maths, our Year 1 children have learnt to explain that addition and subtraction are inverse operation, learnt to explain that addition is commutative and we have begun to learn to find pairs of numbers to 10. In History, we have looked at the changes that were made in London after the fire. We know streets were made wider, houses were built further apart and that they were made out of brick. In RE, we recapped our learning on Ramadan and know that Muslim’s fast during Ramadan. We know that at the end of Ramadan Muslims break fast with a celebration called “Eid”. We know that Muslims celebrate Eid by getting new clothes, going to the Mosque and by have a party with their family and friends with lots of yummy food! We made some “Happy Eid-al-Fitr” cards which we passed to Mr Holmes to give to Mrs Chavan to take to Barnsley Mosque. In Science, we continued our learning on Animals including Humans and we looked at different life cycles including; humans, butterfly, chicken and frog. We know that the term ‘metamorphosis’ describes the change from a caterpillar to a butterfly. On Welly Walk, we took part in a Spring nature wall. We drew and wrote about what we could see, hear, feel and smell. We had a lovely time exploring our nature reserve in the sun and to see how it has changed from Winter to Spring.
